NB forum

Re: A simple solution...

What's the point? If you are going to all that trouble, just have a NB forum - simplest filter of all!

Re: diversity

Currently there is a lot about bio(flora and fauna) diversity and I really think Scuttlebutt should be promoting fora diversity too.

Re: A simple solution...

or also, as I suggested in the other nb forum thread, give all NB threads a non date slip status, meaning that as more posts are added to all topics, the NB thread will slowly drift south line by line and eventually leave its place to boating threads only

NB threads will still be in the party, but will be less noisy guests

Re: A simple solution...

It would be interesting to see the division of wants here as there seems to be a definate divide- I don't really want to have to go to other NB forums as I feel it would lose the spontaneity and almost be a bit contrived- filters may be a better way of letting people have what they want. I'm not techy, so am not sure how easy it would be.

Can we have a recycle bin?

Like the good old Bill Gates one, so we can drag and drop the rubbish and leave an uncluttered front page? Go away sailing for a weekend and much of the more interesting stuff has drifted to page 2 leaving the lunatics running the asylum. IMHO of course and I'm on the right forum to say so since I just ordered a (virtual) drink.

Bugger me Robin! Someone rattled your cage or are they weaning you off the Prozac?

I'm strongly in favour of a change like this.

A large number of previously regular and valued contributors no longer post here because the signal-to-noise ratio is just too low. I would support a move that would tempt such people to return.

The problem with a straw poll like this is that you are likely to get more support for the status quo from the regulars who find this format suits them.

Re: A simple solution...

wouldn't necessarily need a checkbox, it would be quite easy to parse out NB from the heading. it would take a little discipline to put NB there in the first place but there are ways of achieving that.

I thought democracy was allowing everyone an opinion and a decision based on majority wishes. What we currently have is a very noisy minority swamping the forum with rubbish posts about new forums. IMO this vocal minoroty is trying to stifle any views other than their own and as Kim says goes to prove his point exactly.

Robin, I take your point and you'll see that I have posted on the other board about the way forward.

Regarding the proliferation of forum requests that was meant as a bit of fun and, if it has offended, I apologise, as it wasn't the intention.

Just been over to the PBO forum - to look at a truly enthraling thread on varnishing cabinsoles - when I noticed that Kim's NB forum thread, didn't have a single reply from 09.30 this morning. It just goes to show that we do have a perfectly servicable boaty forum. It's the totaly inanity of Scuttlebutt which makes it so appealing - IMHO, that is.

No - it's not democracy unless all interested parties are free to have their say without fear of abuse from others.

Several valued posters have said that they are fed up with the agressive tone of the forum and they are unlikely to contribute to a thread such as this.

How very patronising. Even varnishing floor boards has got to beat reheating a pie.

I always thought of PBO R2R as the technical how to forum and to Scuttlebutt as the YC Bar where there was a mix of discussions, mostly boaty but not so technical as well as a few other non boaty topics. It is the ratio that is unbalanced at present, IMHO of course.

Again I have to agree with you Robin. I love the humour on the forum and I think to try to isolate all NB things in a separate forum will simply not work. But I also hear the frustration.

Perhaps it's a time for forum members to apply a little self discipline.

I don't think there is a need for a NB forum.
Reasons:
If I want a serious answer to a boaty question, I use R to R.
I've lurked long enough to know who the purveyors of drivel/aggression are- /forums/images/icons/smile.gif- I don't read their posts.
Most people are quite good at putting NB/Monday joke or other signifier in their post title, if needed.
All in all, it's worth sorting through the dross for the few nuggets of genuinely funny stuff, IMHO
It can be annoying when a thread is hijacked- but I don't see how a separate forum would prevent this.

So far as I am aware anyone is free to post anything on here so long as it does not break the forum rules. What do you class as abuse? I have been ticked off fairly severely by other forum members - that is their right, as it is mine to respond. Cut and thrust of argument I would suggest.

Who are these valued posters and by whom are they valued?

I like this forum as it is and, no, I'm not part of any clique.

Re: Wrong name

Kim, the new forum is misnamed.

Call it "The-In-Crowd" then they will all scurry off with little persuasion to discover who has the biggest collection of Frey Bentos tins.

Re: Wrong name

Agree entirely. NB threads aren't the problem. Its the endless in jokes about cauliflowers, teak decks and other irrelevences that I find irritating. Anything that encourages the guilty parties to segregate this type of private communication is to be encouraged.
