Re: Boo!

well, i'm not in favour. The jokes and silliness (most of them anyway) is part of the 'butty and moteryboatchat "feel". The r2R forum is the Strikly Boating forum, imho.

Anyway, I am thinking of buying a Dufour wotsit 456cc, but having realised that jimi is a scottish git, i won't. But at least sticking in some yottie chat means it's a bit boatie, innit, see? Did anyone see the telly last night? I was hoping to see the start of the vendee globe, but it wasn't shown, posssibly because I was playing a DVD of clint eastwood in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, one of my favourite films.

Agree 100%.
Boats & sailing interest me a lot, other people's opinions on why the world is going to hell on a handcart – well, I can get them from the horses's mouth (Daily Mail) if I feel the need.....

I vote with the Noes to the Left. If it's essential to separate out some of the traffic, perhaps a sailing-specific forum (or maybe just colregs /forums/images/icons/smile.gif). Part of the attraction of Scuttlebutt is to be able to chat vaguely about boats without being po-faced about it.

but maybe you have a point about performance, it took me 10 mins to get a post up this morning and i don't think it's just my age.

Re: Boo!

I have got to agree with you on this one.
The banter on SB and Mobo is enough to make a long day shorter. If we only had a n.b. would you really go looking for Pies etc there. Lets face it I think that was rather more entertaining than the current electronics jobbie on a 1.2m stink pot. No that is not jealousy cos he can buy one because I am very happy with the wee boat I have.
OK have PBO as the techy completely boaty jobbie but leave SB and Mobo alone.
Oh dear should I have put n.b. in the title...........

I'm in favour.
As frequent reader (albet an infrequent contributer) I visit the forum to share in nautical discussions and the occasional bit of humour - however the recent surge in NB threads has made scuttlebutt just another chat room - and there are plenty of those out there. It's not that I dissaprove of these threads, It's just that Scuttlebutt used to be a bit of escapisim, and a place to daydream and wish you were out on the water, or at least lying in the mud with a paintbrush in your hand!

Speed not really an issue

Personal experience suggests that although the nature of YBW fora makes them slower to load than a web page or a forum with fewer posts, the nature of your net connection is probably the issue.

I rarely visited YBW when I had slow dial-up - it really did get too tedious. Now with 2Mbps wireless broadband it's almost always fast, even to post where there is a second or 2 delay. So if those of you using ADSL are having a bad time then it's likely its either your connection or the contention on it.

Having said that if it's horribly slow for some of you (well some of you do post even more often than I do /forums/images/icons/smile.gif) then perhaps the segregation is the only answer.

Kim - are there any other options ? - such as archiving threads so the current forum is much shorter - that is after all where most of the browsing and posting occur. Could then have the Old YBW forum - ideal for grumpy old men !

When I'm short of time, I'm definitely in favour of removing the non-boaty posts as I just can't sift through everything. The side effect of the current situation is that I try and decipher the titles and miss some good posts based on what I think looks like a non-boaty title.

Of course when I have loads of time (like this summer when I was between jobs) I read everything.

Prefer it as it is. With winter coming there will inevitably be more non boaty threads but I enjoy the current diversity.

You're all answering in the wrong place and clogging up this forum- answers should be on Forum News where the post is /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Personally I like it as it is and usually end up looking at most posts. It doesn't irritate me or make me feel not part of the in crowd- it's just entertaining and if a post looks dull, I don't read it. I think part of the proble here is the difference between dialup and broad band users. I can quite see how frustrating it would get with slow download times. I think that if we try to strictly define NB and B, then the forum will lose some of it's character and appeal.

A simple solution...

to describe, perhaps less so to implement....

a filter so people could choose not to see the NB threads. not technically very difficult to do if you have a tame techie in house.

I do enjoy the diversity, but have noticed an increase lately in What are you having for tea tonight?, and when did you last have a bowell movement? type threads

I hope that SB and MoboChat can stay as they are. I think it would be quite limiting if boats were the only subject of discussion rather than an interest in boats being the common denominator of the contributors.

I would agree with limiting search facilities to registered users, but I think that it is important to allow non-registered users to be able to see the forums otherwise they are unlikely to become registered users.

How about moving all threads more than a month old into a separate part of the site?

Re: A simple solution...

That's agood idea Snow leopard, but would need a tick box or the like on the post initially to say if it was B or NB- this would avoid posters having to remember to put NB in the title. The post would not post until it was defined as B or NB. Just an idea.

Users could then specify in their preferences if they want B, NB or both.

I still like everything together, but this would speed things up for some users.
