Loking towards getting an e series and wondering which Navionics card to get.

Have looked at the Navionics site and it looks like the Gold series gives you a picture that looks like a chart and the Platinum series gives you photos of the ports.

Comments or corrections anyone?

Platinum Plus gives you a lot more than just photos of ports. You get 3D underwater and coastline mapping, which can be overlayed on Google earth, and some other impressive stuff. I had a play with it on jfm's fab new set-up. It's certainly not necessary for navigation, but can be useful to "see" the bottom as you approach ports, plus its great for guests to look at, and more interesting to have on for long cruises than the 2D map.

If you have the E series, its got to be worth the extra £130 or so for Plat Plus imo.

Actually, Nick, I dont agree that its worth the extra.
I didnt find that the underwater views were very impressive.
The concept of the 3D stuff is flash but definately not any use for actual navigation.

I have upgraded my G Series (ready loaded) charts to a Platinium Plus for the Western Med but only because I wanted to see what the difference between Platinium and Platinium Plus is. You also get a higher resolution photo of the ports where they have them but , again, its a moot point whether its worth it.

Having said that, I would always treat my nav system to the best charts available - a matter of principal.

The 3D stuff was fun along the coast of France, as the water gets deep quickly so you can cruise close inshore and have the land and seabed shown on the chart. It's more for fun than navigation though, I agree.
