I have the app on an android tablet but I have never noticed that and I would be worried if I did.

I just looked at my position on this Android phone (I use MemoryMap) and it showed me as being in the field behind the house and doing 6 lnots on a course of 248 degrees. I have done this before and know that it will settle down after a few minutes. The moral of the story is that you should not rely on accurate positions when the system has just been turned on.

Do you have the WiFi only or Cellular & WiFi model?

The Cellular & WiFi is the only one with an inbuilt gps.

Lot of new drone owners soon find out that !

Its something I've never understood that near all Android Tablets have GPS but Apple have models with and without GPS ... and the Apple costs a serious amount more.

Usually around £100.00 more for a gps chip prepared one.

Does the iPad have a built in gps or does it rely on wifi for position?
The iPad with the SIM slot has GPS, and uses the GPS for position and is very fast and accurate, near instant fix; the iPads with only WiFi depend on triangulation from known Wifi sources for position and it's useless for navigation. The OP hasn't come back to tell us any more, but my guess is that he's got a Wifi-only iPad. "On land it's OK" could be because he's near a dozen wifi hotspots and the triangulation gets near enough.

This was the reason for my question, the ’wandering’ chart sounds like the result of the iPad hunting for position.

That's not the point ... probably best not to kick off an Apple vs Android debate. It's like anchors, or MAB/AWBs. Everyone has their own view. Often firmly held :)
‘Tis a bit annoying though. We’ve got 5 iPads of varying vintages but I had to buy a Samsung tablet to use as a cockpit display as none of the (significantly more expensive) iPads have gps

As they say - unfortunately - we live and learn.

If anyone wants inexpensive Android tablets with fast processors / reasonable ROM / RAM ... usually dual sim ... all with GPS .... Banggood do a line - Mediatech - blows the socks .. legs and whatsits of Samsung - iPad - you name it ...

I have no connection at all - just a very happy user of them.
