I've just been playing with my new toy and found some strange buoys in my usual cruising area (Cardigan Bay, entrance to Porthmadog). These showed no relation to the charted entrance channel. I thought 'WTF' and recalled something about User Generated Content. Decided to look on menu settings and found that a box was ticked for Community Layer. So - these marks had been put, in the wrong location, by an unqualified person and not verified - could be dangerous. Some of this content could be useful but there's no way of knowing what is accurate and what's not.
I'm leaving it turned off!
Second point with using the App is it's generally very good (and cheap for what it contains). But the way of selecting detail on charted features and tide data requires a great deal of accuracy getting it in the cross hairs (sometimes I can double click but not always. On a moving boat this would be difficult if not impossible.
Third point does not really relate to the App but more to the phone (Samsung Galaxy) which I have recently got. I am on PAYG tariff with a 'bolt-on' for limited 3G use. I found that I was using a lot of 3G for no apparent reason. I discussed with a mate - who has a similar tariff but an iPhone - and he told me to turn off some settings and this has now stopped. Can't remember which settings though.

You do not have to be accurate when selecting an item. Just tap anywhere. Then touch and move the map until the feature is below the cross hairs. Then touch the question mark.

If you want to reduce the mobile 'phone data used by Navionics, download the charts for your cruising area while you have a wifi connection.

To make sure they are downloaded, zoom out to a small scale and you should see a coarse map. They grey shading shows the areas where the charts are not yet loaded. Zoom in on the areas you need until the grey shading disappears.

If you zoom in enough, the cross hairs do not need to be positioned so carefully.

I downloaded the full thing when I was on Wi-fi which gives me all UK and Holland. The problem with Apps/data useage is, apparently, that each App contacts bass every so often to revise/update if your phone settings allow it (which mine now don't).
When you zoom in, the chart feature resizes so it's always hard to hit. I'm getting better at it - it's OK from the comfort of my armchair but would hard on the boat.
No comments yet on the Community Layer issue.

That's the point. Don't try to hit it. As I said, hit anywhere then move the chart. That way you can be accurate to the tiniest level very easily.

I always just touch an inch or so away from the feature I want to look at. Then touch and stay holding just below it. Slide the chart till the crosshairs are where you want them. Simples.

Another navionics question

My mate has a more recent version on his iPhone. Mine has no tidal data (v5.0.4) but has other features he doesn't have. I have had no upgrade alerts. Ideas?!

Are you sure? I have 5.0.4 on iPhone. Whatever you do, do not upgrade. A waste of £21 IMHO.

I have all the tide information. Look at the diamond off Yarmouth.

I wouldn't do that if I were you.:eek::eek::eek:

5.0.4 is no longer available on the app store. If you delete it you may not be able to reinstall without paying again.

The new iPhone version is the same as the iPad version which I have.

I think you will find it doesn't have any more tide info. It has a new tides panel but you still have to say what data you want on it.

I'm interested to know why you took a photo of your iPhone to illustrate your post. A screen dump would have been easier!

You are assuming I sent it from my iPhone. I didn't. I sent it from my iPad. I already had the forum and Photobucket up and running and it just seemed a quicker way to do it.

I knew that but how do you get that list at the top of your page. BBC. EBay etc?

Hi-jacking thread

Hey Guys, you're well off topic with your 'how do you do this/that on your iPad'
I am after some responses to my serious enquiry about whether you can trust information on the 'community layer'.

Sorry, if we appear to be disturbing you! I wasnt aware you had made any enquiry. You made three points and asked no questions.

On the Community layer issue you actually said " these marks had been put, in the wrong location, by an unqualified person and not verified - could be dangerous. Some of this content could be useful but there's no way of knowing what is accurate and what's not." you then said you were leaving it turned off. Not a question mark in sight.

You are right. Idiots can put anything they like in. It's uncertified and should be taken as such.

I think you knew that though.;)

I had no idea that some of the information presented on the chart was not from a bona fide source until I saw some oddballs on the area that I am familiar with. If I had been using it as my sole source of information, - not that I would - I could have gone aground. There should be a warning, other than the general 'not to be used for navigation', that some of the data is likely to be wrong. IMHO of course.

Sorry, that was my fault. Now off to look at my Navionics app. I wasn't aware of this 'community layer'.
