Nav Lights on Fairline Targa 30/33

I have recently bought a 1994 Fairline Targa 30/33 and initially I thought there was a problem with the nav lights.

This model has a single all round white light (anchor light) plus the port and starboard lights. The switch for the navigation lights only turns on the red and green lights and therefore the all round white light has to be seperately switched on. On all my previous Fairlines the navigation light switch turned on all the required lights and I find it strange that on this boat, when underway, I have to have the nav light switch AND the anchor light switch on.

I know the end result is the same, but I'd be interested to know whether this is what Fairline expected, or have I got a fault in the wiring to the nav light switch.

Any answers please !

Re: Sounds correct

your boot is under 12m therefore only required (if I recall correctly) to have 3lights viz red, green and all-round white. Not required to have separate steaming light and stern light. Therefore the all round white can also be used as anchor light. That being the case, sounds as though they are meant to be wired up/switched that way, i mean, it seems logical.

If the boat was >12m it would all be different

Re: Sounds correct

Yes I agree that being under 12m the actual configuration is correct, I was just curious whether just the nav light switch should turn on the all round white as well as the red/green rather than having to have the anchor light switch (which is how the legend shows it) on as well.

It would not be the most complicated piece of wiring to make the nav swicth turn on all three lamps and I'm curious as to how Fairline originally produced this, or has someone been fiddling about with the electrics.

Re: Sounds correct

Hmm yes, see your point. A total guess this, but if Fsairline wired it the way you thought it should be wired they would use a double pole switch for the nav lights. They would put the r/g on one pair of poles and the white light on the other pair. Then they would wire a separate parallel anchor light switch, single pole. The use of double pole switch llows all the nav lights to be switched in one go, but stops the +12v sent to the white light from the anchor switch from leaking across and also illuminating the r/g lights. So I would look see...

1. has the nav light sw been replaced?
2. has someone crossed the wires on the switch so that the white and r/g are being switched by the same pole?
3. is there another switch in the panel that is double pole, proving that a double pole switch is available in that design?

Depending on the outcome you could fix the wires or buy a dp switch.

Sorry I knnow your q was actually aimed at anyone who has this actual boat and knows what the orig spec was, I can't help you there, just chucking in a few thoughts. Good luck

Re: Sounds correct

All the switches were original and the nav switch is a single pole. It has the multi spade type splitter which has two yellow cables to the same pole, but this I assume is one for the red and one for the green.

The qulaity of looming under the dash is top class and shows no signs of having been meddled with. This plus your thoughts lead me to suspect that it is how Fairline intended - which is strange really !

I could get a double pole switch as they use standard Carling Ltd. switches. I may just leave them alone, I just wanted piece of mind really.

Thanks for the advice (I may be back - the auto bilge switch and lamp never worked properly and its wiring has got me baffled - and you seem to know your wiring - be warned !)
