I know I've posted on this before, but opinions on this configuration please - is this lighting OK?

10m sailboat...

Under sail; iaw Rule 25 (b) a tricolour at the masthead. No contention here I guess...

Under power: iaw Rule 23 c(1) "an all round white light and sidelights". If I achieved this with an (all round white) anchor light at the masthead plus sidelights at deck level does this not cover the requirements?

Yes. That configuration is fitted by some volume yacht builders as standard on that size of boat.

This may seem a silly question, but what does it matter where an all round white light is mounted (within reason), provided it is visible from all round for the requisite distance.

My reason for asking is that if you are in the dark and all you can see is the white light in the distance, how on earth are you going to be able tell where it is on the boat anyway ? And assuming we're still talking small boats here, what does it matter as you shouldn't be close enough to make any difference?

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here but can't think what it is.

This has come up before - many times, many many times!
Anchoring
Rule 30(b) A vessel of less than 50 metres in length may exhibit an all-round WHITE light where it can best be seen instead of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule.

So masthead or over the cockpit is ok

It does meet the requiremrnts, but it is not advisable in close quarters. If you are motoring up a river on a dark and stormy night you will effectively be invisible from astern as your stern light - way up at the masthead - will be out of sight to a following boat once it gets close.

er as would your (or anyone's) tricolor if you (they) were sailing..............

I do agree the principle but I think generally the height of a mast for such craft (relative to a 50-60fter) is part of the reason it's considered acceptable.
