Nautical Almanac App

I thought he woz adding water to the barrel ;)
Ah... yes... well...

Following a visit to Mr 6d's establishment I was very much surprised by the measures and the %ABV of the Duvel on offer.
So much so, that I contacted Mr Duvel in Belgium and asked them: WTF???

Got a long, technical, detailed and friendly answer within 24hrs - imagine my surprise.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is as follows:
- Measures: More devoted fans will be used to the 33cl measure of the bottled Duvel. However, in the UK there is a culture of buying beer by measure - hence the 1/2 pint and pint glasses.
- %ABV: Duvel sold in bottles has an ABV of 8.5%. This beer re-ferments in the bottle (see the sediment in the bottle). This re-fermenting 'adds' some %ABV. Beer on draft (like offered by Mr 6d) does not re-ferment. Have been given the technical reason why this is not possible, but as Duvel is not a beer usually sold in large volumes it all comes down to maintenance and not blocking the pipes. Therefore, on draft you get a sort of Duvel Lite - not re-fermented - with an 6.something% ABV.

Do i need to bring my own glass

I shall reserve a man size glass for yourself

Anyway, James is still currently on moderation, I've asked Natalie to clear him, then I'll leave him to respond himself rather than copy paste from his PM
Strangely enough, he's not offering a free iphone :D

Well at least you've got it from the horses mouth, that I don't water me beer down

Anyway, obviously the mod's are too busy to clear James so here's his introductory reply, as sent to me by PM. So he is there really, just waiting for approval to post

Hey Sixpence,

I've tried to respond on the forum but haven't seen my post go up for a couple of hours yet?? something about moderators...below is my message I tried to post, is there anything wrong with it? are links an issue?
--------------
*shyly raises head above parapet 'erm hello'*

I really hate to crash a great meeting group, I always find it a bit tacky when businesses do it. However as Sixpence has so kindly introduced me and you all seem mightily friendly I thought it might be nice to answer some of your questions.

Firstly @Lazy Kipper the name of the App is 'The Waypoint Nautical Almanac' and can be found either here - apps.thewaypoint.com, on iTunes - twpt.co/pp or by searching for Nautical Almanac (if you have an iPad make sure you select iPhone Apps too). Interestingly we were warned by a another Almanac publisher who may or may not rhyme with Deeds, not to use that name but I checked with a lawyer mate of mine and we should be fine

@OR4751, mickbond , Laurin, PilotWolf, Horatio, benw, maypoleli I shall PM you guys directly with codes, although we are running out so I'm not sure how many more we can give out for free.

@Sophie19 we worked hard to get as much content on the App as possible (hence heavy wi-fi only 65mb download), as we tested it in France last year and couldn't believe how much data cost, something like £3 a day for 200mb!! So excluding real time data such as weather and tides, you should find that all the marina profiles work, knots knot and compasses compass. We hope to do annual tidal data in time but it would cost us £6-7 an app to pay the UKHO license, so we may leave this until our iPad App which will be around £20. The Weather feed alone costs us £300 a month and we wanted the iPhone App to be as cheap as a magazine or burger king.

Also please do feel free to tweet, facebook, linkin or email me anytime, I love to hear feedback on what we can do better or suggestions for updates (I'm currently working on major lights, Major coastal towns for 'Binos', sailing clubs and opensea map charts)

Cheers James

I'd like to try it...

I'm slightly cynical, however... the last two sets of people who launched an almanac app did a runner - having taken money from me...

Exactly the reason he's had problems finding people to test it, I think. Still waiting for them that can to clear him for posting at the moment though, doubt that'll happen until next week now

If he hasn't got any codes left let me know, happy to loan my phone for a weekend once summer gets here and I'm sure somebody will be able to collect from here and return in passing. Personally think it's worth it, but I can understand if people want to try before they buy
Actually, that might be a line James could look at, a download that stops working after a week, unless you buy, means limited risk of loss either way

You're there at last so I'll leave you to it James, accept the possibility of a little bit of ribbing but trust me, the East coast lot often prove to be more use than the others

Downloaded it this morning - I'm currently in California so I'm not 'covered' as such but had a quick play with it and it seems to be pretty user friendly so far - big buttons are good for poor lighting etc.

Will post more as I play about more - unless you prefer email feedback?

Top stuff Wolfie, glad to hear that you were able to download it okay :)

In terms of feedback, feel free to put it here (we've got thick skin) or email me if you like- however it would be very cool and really helpful if you could put any suggestions or bugs on our UserVoice profile here

Downloaded mine and I like what I see. I reckon this will get plenty of use this summer. And coincidently the first stock picture of Ipswich Haven is a pic of my boat! Will use the above site for feedback.

Thanks

I, too, like the app. Early impressions suggest that the data is useful and the navigation good. One suggestion; would it be possible to have a quick link back to the home page from every level of the menu? It's not a big deal but having to work back through each submenu takes a few extra keystrokes . Also, there don't appear to be any help topics under some areas, e.g the compass; I'd like to know what the 'GPS' button does. I look forward to using the app this season.
