I have a customer who writes thusly -

the Nasa SX35marine radio does not lock on to a signal in any of the scan modes (breaks the squelch & moves on so fast it is not easy to spot the channel number)

He tells me he has just installed a new Silva antenna, and Nasa say the problem doesn't ring any bells with them. Does anyone have a sugestion to offer because although I sell them I have never used one.

Cant help you - but do Nasa still have a website these days? The nasa marine website seems to have disappeared.

No there isn't one, I have one built to cover their requirement but I need the find the time to finish it which I haven't done. Apart from contact details it will also have pdf's of deleted product instruction manuals and some other bits and pieces.

You can make contact via nasamarine@aol.com or dial 01438 354033

Whilst I had my SX35 it didn't behave like that. It sounds like there is a problem with it though. BUT I wouldn't trust NASA to find a fault with it.

I made theses comments on a different thread...

"I had a problem with mine, possibly caused by interference. The strange thing is that it worked OK for a few days, then played up whilst in use. The squelch did not operate properly and caused the receiver to stay in receive mode.

I sent it back and it was returned to me from NASA with no fault found. It had also gained a new sticker on it stating... 'Waterproof to CFR46 standard... is not hermetically sealed and is suitable for mounting in a DRY CABIN ONLY'.

...not really waterproof then... so I had a refund as this was no good for my flybridge. "

I bought one but can't get it to talk to my Garmin 176, I have attached the twoleads it recommends on the flyer in the box, to the two leads that worked fine with my old set coming from the 176, could you find out if there is any other setting that has to be changed, I have done everything by the manual and no luck. I am a very good customer of yours and would appreciate all help possible /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

It's not that I am disinterested in the solution, but like my request for information above, I have never installed one myself, I only sell the boxes. I think a contact to nasamarine@aol.com or a chat with them on 01438 354033 may help you.

If it's like my Garmin, you have to "switch on" the data so that it send out NMEA. Check your Garmin manual.

Thanks Col, but it was and is already set up for NMEA in and out. I will ring Nasa and see what they have to say.

Cheers,

Answer to connecting

I have spoken to Garmin and Nasa and have the answer. The problem I had was that when my broken radio was taken out I was left with a brown and a white lead from the Garmin, the radio had a brown, black and a red lead coming out, I thought I just needed to connect brown to brown and the red to the white, as the black was going to the negative power elswhere, but NO as that did not work.

Answer
I must ignore the white from the GPS as that is NMEA in and not required.
The Brown NMEA out from the GPS should connect to the Brown NMEA lead from the radio
The Red lead from the radio must go to a negative supply, this supply could come from the black lead that is powering the radio.

NOTE
You should NOT connect the red lead and black lead from the GPS straight to a negative source as it will cause a problem. These two leads should be connected together and then a lead comming from both goes to the Negative power source.

Clear as mud maybe, but I will give it a go on Saturday and see what happens /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I accept no responsibilty for anything going wrong, you should seek independant advice before following these instructions /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
