What musical instrument would you recommend a lone yachtsmen to take up? Nothing vulgar please and bear in mind that my voice is unsuitable to say the least.

Read Patrick O'Brian instead, and in your mind's ear listen to the music Stephen and Jack make in the cabin after Preserved Killick has served supper. It has a delightful music all of its own.

If you are alone no one will hear your voice. How about learning some sea shanties?
Where are you steering for my pretty maid?
Chorus ; Away- ay Rio Grande
And have you a sweetheart my pretty maid?
For we"re bound for the Rio Grande
Chorus ; And away Rio etc.

Mouth organ

Actually, thinking about it further, a harmonica would seem to be ideal - stows in your oiiy pocket, cheap(ish), doesn't take to much practise to get a tune out of one, sounds right whether playing a jig or something more soulful, might earn you money in a blues band.

a flageolet (nothing to do with beans or corporal punishment), the modern version of the penny whistle. as easy to play as the infamous school recorder but not as painful to the ear.

While scouting about for a boat last year I came across a 38ft sloop with a full sized organ inside the chart table.
Not sure if it was ever owned by Reginald Dixon !

Personally I favour the ukulele, especially when I'm cleaning windows.

Stylophone

Mini electronic keyboard, as advertised by Rolf Harris in the '60s.

Then, when you are playing discordant, unidentifiable noises to whoever is moored up next to you, you can ask them the time honoured question: "Can you guess what it is yet"? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Stylophone

IIRC the Rolf Harris machine was called a Stylophone:

Itried to keep a guitar aboard for the summer cruise last year. Much too bulky. this year I have bought a mandolin. Should be just the right size.

Apologies in advance if I ruin anyone's peaceful anchorage this summer.

Re: Stylophone

Tried the Styrofoam, couldn't get a decent tune, just set my teeth on edge.
But it was light to carry on-board!

Flute - then you could prance around the foredeck in tights frightening the locals with your Jethro Tull impression.

OK, I've scared myself now...

Melodeon or concertina perhaps a little easier and less bulky.

Look here <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/melodeonframeuk.htm>http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/melodeonframeuk.htm</A>

Excellent for simpler sea shanties etc.
