Continue to name and shame

Can't agree with you. This forum is all about opinions and it is Gludy's opinion that he has received lousy service for which he should be compensated. He should be congratulated for sticking his head above the parapet and assuming Dickies respond positively, that should be publicised as well

Re: Continue to name and shame

Dickies have responded in a positive manner as I have reported, with praise, above.

As far as I am concerned Mr. Dickie investigated properly and then took actions that have pleased me. In fact despite me feeling that I would never deal with a broker again ... I was angry ... I will deal with Dickies again because the boss is a reasonable guy with integrity.

On the more general theme - I myself try to avoid complaining in the Marine World because frankly the standards are so low I would be complaining all the time. However, I am probably wrong in taking that approach because if everyone took it the situation would never improve.

I do claim that I have a right to report my opinions on the forum - if I am making statements then I have to stand by them. do try to offer a balanced view but even that is a matter of opinion :)

"Brokers are not interested in selling your boat as they have had it too easy for too long. "

HAHAHAHA!!! What a great statement! :-D

What do they do to earn money then!?

Bit like saying "British Airways are not interested in selling plane tickets"

Classic!

;-D

British airways will sell you a ticket, but they do not have to supply a flight, read the small print. I did, but i was very bored at the time.

I think you can understand why people think they are not interested in selling boats because of the way they act.

Do you think that most brokers in the trade do a good job at selling boats? My experience is that most do not - some do a good job I am sure but the average boat broker needs a bomb lit underneath them to get them to move at all :)

Re: Client Account shocker

Correct. There is actually no such thing as a client account at all. Either you possess your money/assets, or someone else does, in which case if the someone else goes bust you are in trouble. As mentioned here, you could have the boat money put into escrow, eg held by a solicitor. That protects you if the broker goes bust. But not if the solicitor (or any other escrow agent you might use) goes bust.

The special feature with solicitors client accounts is that the Law Society has an indemnity scheme which pays out joe public if the solicitor holding the client money goes bust or absconds. So, pretty good. But there are no such rules for anyone else, so if any boat broker ever tells you your money is in their client account, it is rubbish and it gives you no credit protection.

But never make any mistake, either you hold your money/possessions yourself, or you have a credit risk against the person who's gottem. Doesn't matter if they are your agent, contract counterparty, or solicitor. If your money is on deposit at bank and bank goes bust, you are in trouble (rare, fortunately, but eg BCCI). For very retail banks, the government might bail out a bankruptcy, but that's the only time. Large cash rich people and companies will typically pursue a policy of not depositing more than a certain sum with one bank at a time. Compnaies like Microsoft (forgotten, have they got $20bn of free cash or something?) run out of banks on the planet when implementing this policy
