My Telly\'s Just Blown Up (NB)

Advice needed, my telly has just blown up, what on earth am I going to do with myself of an evening whilst Nick is on YBW etc.!!

Where's the best place with the best deals to get a flat widscreen telly (not plasma - he'll never run to one of those!). If there are any that incorporate a plotter that would be great as he would be a lot more interested?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Joanne

PS. I'm hoping I'll be allowed a colour one this time.

It has to be a Panasonic or Sony CRT. You can not beat em!

Go to the search bit and type in Sony TV, you will get loads of choices.

hi jo, right concentrate... or in 9 months time....

go for a LCD projector. (cheaper than a plasma, and more usefull... especially if you're having a dinner party with a film after) i think curry's do one for 600 quid... bargain with them and i'm sure you'll get it down!

you'll convince nick that he'll be able to relax with the optical mouse and keyboard, and suft in the comfort of his favourite armchair.....

ok... i'll shut up...

steve.

Try Empire direct, good prices and excellent next day delivery. I think they do colour TVs. If not I've got an old black and white you can borrow, and it's 240/12 volts ;-))

This forum always frowns on companies offering substandard gear. If we were happy with cheap junk we would all go boating in a bath tub & here we are recomending Woolies for a tv? Curries is not just so bad bt their service stinks. Go to someone who offers quality and aftersales service. Visit your local independant Retailer who offers you only what your hard earned cash deserves. Pity you didnt live in Ulster I could have fixed your olde goggle box.

Derekh - Independant retailer !!

in praise of currys et al

All agreed, except one big point. If you buy a telly or whatever from Currys and change your mind, they take it back no quibbles. If you try that with high street independant, genrally they refuse. Now, I dont take tellies back just for sport because I'm bored, but occasionally something just aint right when you get it home and set it up, and you wanna change it, not that it's broken, but you just dont like it. At currys/comet et al, this is no problem. That's why I shop there and not the independants. This is much more important to me than aftersales service - I never use aftersales service on telly, DVD type stuff. It hardly ever breaks these days. But if it does bust in first few months, they change it no quibble. If it busts later - still a very rare event - I chuck it out and get another. Just saying it how I see it...

Re: My Telly\'s Just Blown Up (NB)

All these replies and everyone of them giving advice about where to get another telly. Sad state of affairs. Does home life really revolve around these things. Nows the time to rekindle family life, take up a new hobby. As I type this my wife is just starting another cross stitch thing, my eldest is just looking at a book to find out about some new stamps she's just got. And the youngest, the little tyke, is just sorting the car reg numbers she's just collected, must remember to take that screwdriver off of her.
No seriously, as I reach my middle years pipe smoking and slipper wearing is starting to suit me rather well. Mr Crabtree's fishing tips and fly tying tips are finally becoming useful. Oh and I found that I have rather a craving for Werthers originals.
So forget buying a new telly, get nick to strap the wicker hamper to the boot of the minor and go for a drive in the country, maybe take the bino's and see if you can find the Dartford Warbler that has been reported in your neck of the woods. Maybe the pitter patter of small feet would enhance things and give a different focal point in your life! You don't need the TV for that.

Re: My Telly\'s Just Blown Up (NB)

If I may have my say on the matter of the exploding telly for a momment....I am with Mr H on this one as I have not missed the blessed goggle box at all. The front parlour is now devoid of the ususal East Enders shouting and fighting and whats more I have been able to listen to the wireless.

The demise of the telly has also given my family and I the opportunity to gather round the piano to sing our favourite sea shanties, Joanne has been reciting Proust and the children absorbed in Chaucer. The fire is roaring and ah look who it is at the door its Mr and Mrs Fairline-Squadron who heard the merriment from the lane. My wife beckons them in and as luck would have it Mr Fairline-Squadron has his trombone with him and accompanys me on the piano whilst Mrs Fairline-Squadron impresses all with her deep baritone voice........Ah the pleasures of not having a telly....... but I do already miss my Howards Way Collectors Edition Directors Cut first and second series video collection....

True bliss untill the new one arrives on Friday..

Nick

Are you serious?

You would take a Fairline-Squadron owner and his trombone over an episode of The Bill!!!/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hey, come on Nick, be firm. The space where the telly used to be makes a perfect area for stripping down the dinghy outboard, or even mounting a nice big diesel engine in a glass box. What a talking point!
Remove the sofa and you could make a skittle alley - get some practice in before the next bash at Windsor!
If Joanne still insists, mount one of those natty little flat screens in the ceiling. Better than a mirror!!

Re: My Telly\'s Just Blown Up (NB)

Some very good points raised here and perhaps the new telly should after all go into the shed.

What I really need is a big tank thing so that I can run and service my outboard and the corner of the room where the telly was is ideal.

Yes I will be firm, yes I will be firm, yes I will be firm...........

Well it's ordered now from internet and coming on Friday - a Panasonic 28" wide flat screen. Very excited - can't wait.

Thanks for all the advice.
