my project sealine

Please keep this report running - it's really interesting.
Having seen her when she was at her worst, I can't wait to see the finished rebuild.

Love to see the pics when you get your phone back.

this weekend's photos gone forever sadly. Especially as they included all the marking up and test pilot holes of the bowthruster.

But I will keep the thread going :)

This week I didn't destroy a phone.

The bowthruster tube is in. Below it on the port side you can see the original pilot hole and my guessimate pencil mark based on eyeing a window. I didn't want to break the spray rail so moved it up to here. I'm happy with this.

The gelcoat just has to be faired once it's hard. No need to polish it of course.

This is the inside, you can see there isn't much depth below the deck so the motor will be horizontal. You can see the detail of the laminate and the flow coat.

It's been re chocked awaiting the final coppercoat spray, but the weather may defeat us. If we're ready to launch and haven't managed it we'll slap on a coat of cruiser uno to do us until spring.

The plotter goes in this week. I've decided to raise the dash rather than add a pod as per the early F43s. The plastic sheet is plotter sized. The steering wheel however isn't central to the dash. After a bit of head scratching we decided the plotter will be central to the dash rather than central to the wheel, with guages symmetrical either side. Just the centre bit will be raised by about 3". We want to match the compound curves of the dash, so the plan is to carve the shape out of foam, laminate it then hack the foam away. Watch this space......

This bit still isn't on. It's been a swine to repair, but it's finished now.
IMG_2553.jpg

Remember the transom repair?
IMG_2527.jpg

Cosmetics all done now and there is no trace of the paserelle or davits.
IMG_2551.jpg

The colour match is perfect, the starboard quarter has not been repaired, just polished. The unpolished colour to port and on the locker lid is a little yellower......

I templated up for the fake teak today too.

The elastic is to make sure the planks are all in line.

Forgot to photograph the K+N filters, sorry John next week.

Nice work Mark,

She is going to look like new when you have finished with her. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the interior as well - I like what you are doing to the dash, much better than a yukky pod thing any day.

The interior is being re veneered (JFM fingers in ears and shout "not listening, not listening") in oak.

The aft cabin is in bits to access the bathing platform so that is being done as it is refitted. The rest can be done, bit at a time, once she's launched.

I was on the boat at the weekend. It will look great when done and has a lot of space below.

Very nice stuff Elessar. Yup, great idea to mod the fly dash rather than bolt on a pod

No need for fingers in ears. I love oak interiors; my last 2 boats have had them. I'm only doing my next boat in walnut becuase after 2x oak I need a change. But oak is still hyper trendy and looks fab imho. Good stuff re going to the trouble of re-veneering. Do you have a lacquer system all ready specced and ready to go? Or are you looking for info on that?

Whitelighter - You miserable toad, nothing wrong with pods........

Mark - doesn't your compass sit behind where you're showing the new chartplotter? If so, better check make sure it's not affected by it if located/relocated in close proximity. Assume it's the same as on my F43:-

the compass was there - I won't be able to see it for the plotter.

So the hole is being filled in and it's going to a lesser place. In reality I rarely steer to it, if I did I wouldn't compromise what is the perfect position. I often go out without the plotter - I don't use the plotter at night - but tend to steer to the digital compass, or more frequently, hit the autopilot.

Exactly where? TBA.

I should have counted how many holes I've filled on this boat. I get to about 300 without thinking too hard.

If I had seen your pod for sale I would have bought one, but making one from scratch is as much effort as modding the dash so I went that route.

Your pod is much nicer than the later F43 dash IMHO which was hit with the ugly stick.

no lacquer not sorted. I am thinking of spraying it though - is it worth the effort? A lot of care will be needed to mask thoroughly. And know I don't want full gloss nor full matt. Satin it is then.

PM sent about lacquer. Sorry, some proprietary info, so I'd annoy some folks if I put it on open forum mebbe, hence playing safe and PMing, sorry.

John 100156 that's a very neat pod. Perfectly made for the boat. I think the ones being commented on earlier were the lollipop types

can a raggie join in and say just how much I am enjoying this thread ?

The level of commitment is enormous, and sharing the skills and ideas needed to bring the boat back to top spec is very generous of your time and professional knowledge.

I think I'll rush out and buy myself a mobo ;)

(It still frightens me that yard props are bits of what seem to be old farming fence posts.)

Thanks SB. It's still a boat, I get the same buzz out of fixing ones with sails.

She has metal chocks at the stern which in theory is enough, but she was wobbling so we added the fence posts.

They still sometimes chock saily boats with fence posts if they've run out of metal stands. Not as secure as they rely on friction, and a PITA to work on the boat.

And when owners think they know what they're doing the move chocks themselves.......

The custom dash progresses.
It's had the foam hacked out and been rough faired, the dark brown is fresh filler to cure low spots. Easy to fair now.
It is likely to be gelcoated tomorrow.

As Paul was sanding it we had a small crisis. He shorted a wire and the port engine started! It ran for a while as his sander was on, he didn't hear or feel it. The impeller lid was off, it doesn't even look spoiled, I'll change it anyway though of course.

Toys have been arriving.

The holes is cut to allow the horizontal motor mounting, and the gearbox was fitted. Masked for when we spray the coppercoat.

More stuff arrives - what comes in a box this big????

Oak :) Can't wait to start on this.
