I have been thinking about sailing jackets for upper middle aged inshore day sailors such as myself

I seldom sail in the really hearty rough stuff and I have a set of pretty good inherited foulies including salopettes for then but by and large when it turns bad I want to be in harbour or at home.

I spend a lot of time up estuaries and on rivers and I want a jacket that is

1/completely waterproof

2/with a decent warm collar and tucked away inside I want a hood that is warm and has enough of a peak to keep the rain and wind out of my eyes - big enough to go over the thinsulate hat

3/I want the pockets to be warm and deep - with a zip up inner one for wallet and glasses

4/I want it to be a bit long - about the length of one of those screwfix yellow jobs so that I can sometimes get through a shower of rain without having to struggle into the saloppettes - which is a bit of a mission for a big bloke in a small boat

5/I want it to be in the sort of muted colours that would allow me to wear it in town without looking like a street sweeper , French Cat racer or lego parking warden

6/no more than one badge or logo if possible - but I would prefer it to be unadorned - no high vis reflectors or any of that nonsense thanks

we used to wear bridge coats - navy blue outside, red quilted liner- warm as toast and looked okay for around town, walking the dog and also daysailing

- they were pretty good

oh yes... and I would like it to cost under £100

any suggestions chaps or are we into moon on a stick mode here.

Tribord is quite good. My children have been wearing Tribord sailing stuff for years, it is good value, fit for purpose and more durable than you would expect.
Nearly everyone at The Glenans sailing school wear Tribord, we have found.

GILL Inshore Warm. It's being made obsolete so there are bargains to be had. Retailed at about £150, but you can get them for about £60-£70 now.

that looks okay

a bit short for what I want

the blouson ones are a bit telly savalas

and I like them long enough to allow me to sit on the edge of something wet without getting my arse wet

the screwfix high vis length if perfect - but I want something a bit warmer and with a better hood and a more subdued colour

I was out cycling just before Christmas when it turned VERY VERY cold. My clothing was not warm enough by a long chalk, so I went in to Sports direct and bought a jacket for £50 that on closer examination is rated at 5000 and is breathable with a separate zip out fleece. I am not sure it would cope with the NW Passage but plenty good enough for a drift up to Paglesham or a Cross Channel trip. Long enough to cover the derrière and available in black that makes wearing it ashore less of a statement. Not used it at sea yet though.

I wanted something a tiny bit longer to cover my sorry arse but I might start lobbying herself

I will go in and have a look around sports direct some more
