Morning all,
We're planning a trip to Dublin in a month or so, sailing from Holyhead. We have a dog (rabies jab arranged for this afternoon), and he will have all the right paperwork required by the EU when we travel. I seem to be missing something as it seems that there is no port of entry for yachts with dogs - only three commercial ports allow dogs in, and that is via ferries. Yachts are prohibited from entering at Dublin Commercial Port. There is no information that I can find for yachts arriving with dogs on board. Any advice/experience gratefully received. Thanks

Update: I have emailed the Department of Agriculture for advice and will post any useful info here if I get a reply

As far as I understand you can only take a dog to the EU on a commercial ferry, not by private yacht.
Sorry this is not what you want to hear.

As far as I understand you are also only allowed to bring pets into tge UK via ferries not private craft.
Not certain this applies in the common travel area.

Yes, this is what I fear...I have contacted the Agricutural Dept in Ireland and await a response. Looks like we might be sailing to the Isle of Man instead.....

From the Irish Government website Pet Travel: OutsideEU

So it depends on if you can arrange compliance checks arriving at Dublin, Ringaskiddy or Rosslare

Pet Dogs, Cats and Ferrets from the Above Countries May Only Enter Ireland Through Cork Airport, Dublin Airport, Dublin Port, Shannon Airport, The Port of Cork at Ringaskiddy or Rosslare Europort and Must Undergo Compliance Checks on Arrival.

My understanding is that because border checks for pets include reading their microchip to verify that the paperwork belongs to the animal, it can only be done at places where there's appropriate equipment. That means places and modes of transport where such checks are both available and unavoidable.

Are you allowed to sail into Northern Ireland then take The dog by land over the border?
I think it might be an option, but on initial investigations, you also need certain paperwork and also the entering via Commercial ports only applies. Which is the sticking point as private yachts are prohibited from the commercial ports.....

Yes, that's the point exactly. Really frustrating....

UPDATE: It seems that it is impossible to arrive in Ireland via private yacht. I had a reply from the Irish (DubPort) with the following wording:

Good Morning

As per the advice available on Pet Travel: Home

PETS MAY ONLY ENTER IRELAND THROUGH CORK AIRPORT, DUBLIN AIRPORT, DUBLIN PORT, SHANNON AIRPORT, THE PORT OF CORK AT RINGASKIDDY OR ROSSLARE EUROPORT AND MUST UNDERGO COMPLIANCE CHECKS UPON ARRIVAL. PETS MAY NOT ENTER IRELAND THROUGH SMALL/PRIVATE AIRPORTS, PORTS, MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS ETC.

If you require any further information please make contact to

Pet Travel - for general queries only ( not to book a compliance check )

I have emailed livetrade@agriculture.gov.ie to ask them to confirm that it is not possible for a private yacht to bring a pet into the country. (ie confirm that it is not possible to arrive and go into the port to get clearance for the animal....

We entered Ireland at Cork last year, direct from the Azores. We had emailed ahead to advise them that we were coming. Our dog has a rabies jab and titre test that confirm your dog is carrying the rabies antibodies. I think your dog needs to have the rabies injection 3 months minimum before travel. You will have to check that as it may have changed.
I asked the official government vet who cleared our dog in, what the procedure was for traveling from the UK to Ireland on yacht with a dog. He said we would have no problem as our dog has a Portuguese pet passport. I don't think it's is possible to sail direct to Ireland with a dog without this
