It may not be a uniquely British trait, but it is certainly characteristic of this country for sad, bitter older people to constantly denigrate and rubbish the efforts of the young.
Perhaps it is because they feel life's passed them by, or they hate anything that make their own efforts look inadequate, I don't know. But every time exam results are published, or a university is mentions or a report of something being done by young people, the usual suspects come out and vomit up their usual *******s about how everything was harder / better / more admirable in their days.

It's easy to see why so many more senior people are nervous about a national debate about euthanasia, it's because the young would probably vote for it to be compulsory so there can be a massive cull of all the old deadwood in this country.
And judged by a lot of the posts on these forums, it could only be a good idea.

(...) Such criticism as there has been have been of the OP's actions and not of her personally.

I thought this example seemed pretty close to being personal:

"Blagger I think is the best word.
Ra Ra Ra, make lots of excited noises, clap hands, im important, look at me, facebook, twitter, ra ra ra, i must be important i wrote a book, look at my hair and dippy hippy clothes, im important, i havent grown up yet, jump up and down and clap hands, ooh arent i cute, and so it goes on!
Sorry Ellie but at some point you have to grow up, you are an adult now, you have bought a money pit, its going to cost you a pile of money, get a proper job, earn some corks and then go and splash it!
Stu"

So you think that the balding flatulent 50-year-old who has suddenly appeared (HEY!!!!) would have been treated with more sympathy, and that the attempted whip-round would have raised more money for him?

Fair point. I had forgotten that one. Boy, the next PBO contributors' lunch is going to be awkward, isn't it?

Could it be be that they are saddened and embittered by the certain knowledge that no young woman would look twice at them without a shudder of revulsion, and that the nearest they are likely to get to a young woman is drooling over one of Lakesailor's photos of naked girls young enough to be their daughters or granddaughters?

What on earth is your obsession with sex?

But let me ask another question; are the true keyboard warriors not those fragile folk who lurk the shadows, ever vigilant against the merest tiny hint of insult or sarcasm, always ready to summon the gods of political correctness and launch a hail of sanctimonious invective?

(..) the merest tiny hint of insult or sarcasm, (...)

Hardly that, and it got worse when the original poster gave up trying to deal with it. Who could blame her?

There was no need to pour scorn on some wretched woman who has done nothing worse than to get herself into a mess and then ask for help to get herself out of it.

It doesn't seem to me that those who feel like putting in a word in her defence are "fragile fragile folk who lurk the shadows, ever vigilant against the merest tiny hint of insult or sarcasm, always ready to summon the gods of political correctness and launch a hail of sanctimonious invective?" . Just people who don't like to see someone being kicked when they are down and don't mind saying so.

Ah yes.
To allude to the usual "if this was in a pub would you......?" argument.

It's a bit like a table full of blokes (usually is) having a right good whinge about something. Then some bloke holding half a shandy comes across and says

"Don't you think you should end this discussion now? It's getting rowdy and isn't really getting anywhere."

What would be the likely reply?

Phil, it is not like that at all.

Come on, who drinks half pints these days

"OK Lakey, you're right, time to go. Oh, and thanks for driving us, by the way. My turn next week."

It doesn't seem to me that those who feel like putting in a word in her defence are...

Then why not make a defence instead of all this bad teeth + bad breath + 50 Years = pervert/satan stuff. E.g.

Was it poor etiquette to seek advice and then harness it for commercial purposes without being transparent from the outset?

Did OP really want advice, or was the whole thing just a marketing ploy?

Was the OP right to sharply put down some perfectly helpful suggestions from a chap in #290?

And what about the snotty put down of some chap who helpfully pointed out a problem in the planking?

Is this whole ground survey issue not odd? The £1-2K it would cost could easily be repeated up by a gazillion other things on an ancient MFV ...no?

Skipper Stu put up a vicious, clever, nasty, insightful, mean and skillful satirical post. Now we all know that in politics this kind of thing, harsh and possibly unfair though it is, could be printed in the Observer on Sunday. Is there not a cleverer response than, "you are obviously a mentally deranged loon"?

My reply was :

"What a nasty little man you are.

What on earth has she has done to you to prompt such an outpouring of hatred?

I've said it before on here, and I'll repeat it for your benefit, there's something badly wrong with your mind."

I must admit I've not been sleeping well recently and, lying awake in the early hours, my mind has turned to the OP's original launching problem. Hours of idle musing have paid dividends, and I can now make a positive suggestion. Why not put the boat on a low-loader and drive it away from Preston?
.
