Reckon this thread will top 100,000 reads by March though.. perhaps that is what counts in this new, virtual world after all?

Counts for what?

Just a load of old farts whiling away the winter days. I can't see any commercial value whatsoever, but stand to be corrected if anybody can point out tangible gain.

Ironically, I think that the credibility of the OP is beginning to suffer with all this banter and no action.

generally agree

100,000 views from maybe 200 old blokes who do not own 60 foot fishing boats are neither here nor there

monetising (ugly phrase) those digits would be very hard

in fact IPC has made most from it with the adverts seen by the few who do not have blockers on here

as for reputations....

Preston has come out pretty well I think

The OP has/had the courage to take the plunge and do something I would fear to do

I am with Roosevelt on this one

so I hope we will be hearing more from Ellie and her next adventure - it has kept a lot of old blokes entertained

I sincerely hope that she gets out of this scrap without losing too much money.

Buying a decent sized living space is really tough. My sons girlfriend lives on a 35 foot canal boat in London because she cannot afford her own property. It takes real self discipline to live permanently in a space not much larger than my upstairs landing. Ellie saw the chance of getting a much better living space and went for it

good for her

I'm surprised the hot air generated on this thread hasn't lifted the boat gently off the quay and into the water;)

Ah! The first new suggestion for how many hundred posts? A few nice big hot air (or helium) balloons and off she goes with no problems of ground loading, cranes toppling, ... .

I'll get my coat!

Booooooooooooring. What she needs is that nice Dr Podkletnov and some of his spinning-superconductor gravity shields.

Warning: Antigravity research may contain nuts.

I remember a feature on the then McDonnel production line ( F-15's I think ) where the nearly complete aircraft were pushed around from line to line on hover pads; as they're not in business any more, unless Being grabbed them maybe the hover pads are going spare somewhere ?!

We just looked at the article with bemusement, moving Hawks & Harriers around at BAe involved prying Old Alf the crane driver out of the smoking room and controlling the aircraft with bits of string no wife would consider fit to suspend her washing...

Still, I know hovercraft still load the ground but it would be nicely dispersed.

I am going to lurk until I can jump in for the 1,000th post.

Already have it prepared:

'Don't know if anybody has mentioned this but have you thought of getting the Army to put in on one of their low loaders and launching elsewhere'.

Also, returning to military kit ( maybe civilian too ) how about the kit used for recovering crashed aircraft ?

I know for a fact that involves cranes and transporter platforms designed to cope with soft ground, as I always eyed up the caterpillar tracked dollies, thinking ' must be useful for something in the boat world '...

A hoverpad might well be a solution if it turns out that the ground near Elizmor can't take a crane any more. Mind so, so would a bigger crane, and that would probably be cheaper.

I worked for McD for a while - the sort of hoverpads they used only work on very smooth surfaces - don't think they will help much along Preston dock side!

True, but there are bigger things available for moving heavy loads over soft ground. Basically a skirt which you fit round a trailer, and big fan to pump air in. A nice big container is 40' long by 8' wide, which is 46,080 square inches, and a miserable 2 psi under that will lift 46 tons ...

Why should the ground realistically no longer be able to take a suitable crane? Boats going in and out of that place all the year round, by crane, by road ...over the same old same old hallowed ground..

That dock was built to take serious, industrial shiploads of heavy loads, The drainage seems good and there has been loadsa rain/ frost/traffic cycles and crane movements over it over the years? We are back to not accepting empiricals. Because that is the true effect of paperwork it creates stasis and static inertia.

Dangerous to be complacent but at the same time , do I detect a remorseless nihilism creeping in?
Like seeing everyone else wearing life jackets ( their choice) so suddenly if you don't...Omg , finger waggling...death awaits ( quite possibly so of course )..
