My NEW boat...

Greetings all,

Well, it's arrived....I ordered my new boat at the Southampton Boat show, and it arrived just before Christmas. Tis my first motor boat since defecting from sailing so it's all new to me.

She is a Quicksilver 5.80 pilot house with 75hp Mercury 4 stroke out board, and although not as impressive as most of the forums boats, I think this a good starter.

I'm moored in Universal Marina on the Hamble and I've used it about 5 times since it arrived. The last time was to wiz (engine now run in) down southampton water to see the QMII - That was a good day. A few teething problems.....Rev counter seems to be a bit erratic, small leak from the hatch, windscreen wiper motor cover seems to constantly leak water - even when it's not raining!!!!, but all these things are minor compared to how much fun I'm having.

Due to fact that we were honestly not planning on getting a boat at the boat show, and was meant to be a relaxing day out the day before we got married!, we have called the boat 'Onawhim'.

Will be out again this on Sunday weather permitting.

Also, what is furthest one would go in a boat like this?.

Its great when somebody is so excited about their boat! I like the name.

You can go all sorts of places, Isle Of White along the coast just check the weather before you leave! whats the range of your boat? I go to the Isle Of White on my 15 footer and want this year to go completely around it but Im having to check range and refuelling possibilities.

I bought my boat new at LBS last year, and as expected a few teething problems occurred, I'm sure you will get them sorted out.

Congratulations! There are a bunch of us based on the Hamble - I'm up river from you at Eastlands - Pm me and maybe we can meet up! As to how far can you go in your boat? Well, chances are the boat will go futher and in worse weather than you! Range will play an important part but given good weather you have all the south coast to play with. Weymouth, Poole etc. Not much going East though apart from up to Chi Harbour.

At 5.8 you have a very towable boat. Get down to the Med this summer. Book an apartment and some marina space well in advance.
Do you have an auxiliary engine - just in case. There was a thread just before Christmas on this.

There's a couple of these in the harbour at Porthmadog. Good seaworthy boats, and one of them seems to be out in all weathers. Enjoy!

Congrats on new boat. On a whim is the best way to buy a boat imho. Nice motor too. You should easily be able to get to Chichester east, and Lymington westwards. Lymington is beautiful, nice public quay right in the town. With decent weather you could get further, say poole.

Good name, and you can rearrange the letters to "Hi, Woman" if you're out pulling

The boat has an intergral 90l fuel tank, and I'm guessing will do 5-7l/hr, I guess the real question is would nipping across the channel in the summer be a big no-no for a boat of this size?.....

DavidJ...the med would be nice, in fact, my folks have a place close to some marinas on the costa Blanca, and are thinking of buying a runaround boat at the moment.....But it seems that all the Marinas want you to buy boats from them to secure a berth...Any advise??.

You can go anywhere you like, including across the Channel, providing you have the range and the weather. Obviously, you'll need a very settled spell of weather although watch out for mid Channel fog in settled weather especially early in the season. Also calculate your range carefully leaving at least a 20% reserve and be aware that fuel consumption can rise dramatically in heavier seas
You should carry a VHF, lifejackets for all crew and a liferaft (which can be hired). A handheld GPS (with sufficient batteries) would be very useful and a radar reflector. A radar would be worth having but that's an expensive add-on
Alternatively, as already suggested, bung the boat on a trailer and take her across on the ferry which leaves out the boring, possibly scary bit

There will be boat sellers who probably own berths in the marina but there will be a marina office who will look after permanent renters and visiting boats. Probably a bit early in the year to talk booking a week or so, but no harm in internet searching some of the local marinas and shooting off an e-mail enquiry. Don't think of turning up in the summer on spec.
The med is quite choppy during the summer (except mornings and evenings) so as guidence to a 'runabout', yours is really the minimum size for a good dry fun boat.

Yes, good luck, you'll have great fun and will keep out of the rain. Very sensible choice.
It seems that all new boats have teething problems. Just make sure that the dealer putts things right.
