Musto Sailing gear problems

Why is a Musto Ocean Gortex jacket so expensive? £350.
How much do you reckon Musto actally pay to have them made?
My guess is a tenth of that. £35.

When I get them back from Mustos - the goretex duly reproofed, I will stand under the shower in a controlled test.

1. My 10 year old Musto set (as a control)
2. The new Goretex lot
3. In my 20 year old Barbour

lets see which wins........ Results (without video) to be published here...

By the way, are you in Gosport boatyard at the moment? we are along side each other - or we were on Tuesday....

Interesting! As a newcomer to sailing I've been wondering what waterproofs to buy. This is of particular interest as I have breathable waterproofs for:
Motorbikes (sub £200 for something that withstands 80 mph in driving rain for 4 hours)
Shooting (everything from Barbour to ex-German army - which are excellent, although camouflage).
Ecological fieldwork - the German ex-army kit is fantastic. I've sat out for hours in torrential weather and been bone dry.

The idea of spending £400 for Musto MPX is acceptable as I want to 'fit in' the problem I have is in working out what sizes as nobody appears to make for 6' with 50" chest and 42" waist.

Not Gosport Boatyard but a bit further down on Premiers hardstanding.
Tomorrow I shall endeavour once again to get the second half of the cutlass bearing out :-(
I'm armed with all the suggestions from the other thread including stuff to go down the stern tube from the inside and a slide hammer for the outside and 12mm studding to pull through a socket. Failing that I have to wait for the recipricating saw to turn up so I can cut away!

Must be another Talulah - a 40ft Malo? - still in the water last Monday.

Anyway - good luck with the cutlass bearing. If I am allowed out tomorrow, might be down there......

I thought Gore gareneed the product against leeks, maybe contact them directly, it definately should not leek, the outer coating just keeps teh outer fabric dry not your body

As you have seen above, I will be doing my own controlled tests. The results will be published here. Will the 20 year old barbour win?

Hi Chris, I would'nt be too hasty in blaming Musto, are you not certain its not a bit of un noticed incontinence thats creating the problem? Its not unusual in gentlemen of advanced years with a disposition towards strong drink.

Bloody typical - you wee harry boy.....I will have you know that I can still pee over a five bared gate....

Bet you cant guess what foulies I wear at sea ?

Fluorescent high visability yellow builders/land workers lined jackets & trousers.
Fully lined, waterproof zips and valcro seams. You cant beat them. Often/ Usually ex Government surplus available at £25 a set. Compare that with the 4 or 5 hundred quid or more the weekend sucker yachties pay for similar clothing because it has got a makers name on it ?. Serves just as well as the stuff suckers buy at xxx £££.

When will the weekend sailors realise what fools they are ?

Funny you should say that. I confess I do have a Gill Key West jacket for snailing, but SWMBO and I went walking in the Lakes some years ago and realised we had left our weather jackets at home...doh!! We bought the cheapest hooded walking jackets (PU coated Nylon) we could find to tide us over, and when we went walking all our friends in their posh goretex stuff got soaked and we stayed dry:D It was our friends who noticed as well:D:D

Only last week I bought a fetching fluorescent yellow bomber jacket with built in hood from the builders merchants. £10...but the pockets are a bit small./ Its brill !! literally:D

Does anyone still manufacture the good old heavy duty nylon jackets. I still have my old Henry Loyd jacket which must be circa 20 years old with only the velcro needing to be replaced.

If all this washing lark is required with Gortex I'd be delighted if there was an alternative, albeit a sweaty one.

I was wondering the same thing myself.

yeah, I think Goretex is overkill for the normal cruising sailor., OK for the racing gorillas leaping about ,, but sitting huddled in the cockpit rarely causes one to break out into a sweat!

One reason they are so expensive is to fund the very high level of customer support. I bought a set of HPX gear in about 1995 and when they started to delaminate after a couple of years use they were replaced FOC. You don't get that with a £50 set from Aldi.
