With ref to another post thought I'd try this one:-
What music to you like to listen to in different sailing conditions

Calm - any Bob Marley. Pink Floyd 'Dark side of the moon', Joni Mitchell 'Blue'
Grover Washington. & similar
F3/4:- Meatloaf, Dr John, Rod Stewart, Juan Luis Guerra, Van Morrisson, Bruce Springstein
F5 + Carmina Burana by Karl Olff, Wagners 'Ride of the Valkyrie', Jimiraquoi

That isn't to say that the peace and quiet of the waves rushing by isn't music in itself - just those 'other times'

Just had a great weekend in the Solent on our mutual friend's Bav 40. One of our favourites for entering port was the main theme to "The Trap" by Ron Goodwin. You've heard it played during the London Marathon coverage on the Beeb. Very nautical sounding......

...kept in a sealed plastic wallet with a red triangle and the instructions "only to be played in the last moments before stepping into the liferaft and (on the MP3 player) upon watching as the ship slips slowly beneath the waves, never to be seen again."

Otherwise your on-board collection seems very like my own.

However a give away compilation from the Daily Mail a couple of years ago is a well played favourite. We also bought the BBC's sound dramatisation of "The Oddesey" which is particularly appropriate and gives us a special buzz (so long as we can stay awake for 3 CDs) as we are cruising around the Ionian at the moment.

Much to the annoyance of my kids, I refused to specify cockpit speakers when ordering our boat.

I love music in pretty much every form, the Cyrus hifi, at home, is one of my more treasured possessions and, when tied up, our boat is usually filled with music. But, at sea there's nothing to beat a good old sing song. Anyway, with music blasting out I'd miss all those wonderful DSC alerts.

Can't fault most of your choices, with the possible exception of Rod the Sod /forums/images/icons/smile.gif, but I'm afraid my mental capacities are so limited that Wagner is strictly for those eyes closed, zero disturbance risk days.

"When the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon". Brilliant lyric, although, I have to admit, somewhat worryingly appropriate at times.

Steve.

And it's westering home, and a song in the air,
Light in the eye, and it's goodbye to care.
Laughter o' love, and a welcoming there,
Isle of my heart, my own one.

ince I installed a MP3 player on board, I've got a very wide sellection to choose from. For long trips the "epics" seem very favorite eg Pink Floy Meddle and Atom heart mother, Yes Close to the edge, lots of blues for late in the evening and female performers for the quite moments (eg Aimee Man, PJ Harvey, Sandy Denny, Fiona Apple.....). Also some Zappa concerts, instumental fushion and Keneally for the weird moments.....

It is a waste of time and it annoys the pig.

I love a bit of Roger Whittaker whistling, followed by Rolf Harris and then as the wind gets stronger, the Cheeky Girls fit the bill perfectly. As for the evenings, the perfect music for eating FBs to has got to be some good old Chas and Dave.

BTW- I like the sound of that new Celine Dion album- must get onto Amazon and buy a copy before they sell out.

Unfortunately for all who sail with me, I love to sing when I am happy or sailing (same thing). I think they would prefer to listen to anything (even Aled Jones) in preference to my singing! My singing usually wins out out and it is a case of join in in or suffer.
Beware all who traverse Shoreham or Portsmouth Harbour/Solent.

Each to his own but.....

... there is a note by the stereo on our boat:-

"Anyone playing Rolf Harris records on this boat will be consigned to the locker of one Mr D Jones forthwith"

Well not actually but everyone is aware of the ban!

Re: Each to his own but.....

You must have played Rolf Harris on your boat to have to invoke a ban and put in place a penal code for infringement, or is it just a random ban?

In the late 70's the BBC made a documentary about the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, the theme music to this was Rod Stewarts "Sailing" After that it always brings back memories of the sea. Last May whilst helping a friend deliver his new Naajad 373 across the North sea from Sweden to Scotland as dawn approached and we approached the exclusion zone of one of the rigs in the Buchan oil field we sailed 50mtrs past the rigs guard ship whilst blasting the tune out of the deck PA system....I often wonder what the crew of the guard ship thought as we sailed out of the mist blasting out the tune then dissapeared over the horizon...it certainally brought a few punters out on the deck!!!

As a fellow Cyrus owner I went and bought some of those small Gale speakers for £50 and put them under the sprayhood. Does the trick if you want to listen to quality music.
