so I want to run the engine for a while , to check it for leaks and the such

what's best a large container like a IBC or muffs on the hose pipe

A water tank will replicate "real world" conditions, sucking the water into the engine, as opposed to pushing it through under pressure from a supply. If an impeller is compromised in any way, pushing water through under pressure won't really highlight it so much.

Depends on the size of motor, I use an old 5 gallon brewing bin, fill 3/4 full of fresh water, fire up the 2.5hp outboard, turn the fuel tap off and leave it for a few minutes until the fuel runs out. It flushes out the cooling system and no fuel to clag up the carb.

A different story if you're talking about a 225hp jobbie ?

Large bucket or watertank. I wrecked the water pump on my outboard by using muffs as they just leaked regardless of what I tried to do to stop it.
Some engines like Suzuki's DF50 require you to blank off the water intake (under the AV plate) with gaffer tape when running on muffs. Actually states this in the manual!

Muffs every time for me. Then the water pump's not pulling in aerated water from the exhaust gas.
