has anyone moved south for boating and or better weather to improve life ,A is the weather better is the boating better ,would like to hear comments ,cheers SS

Yes. We were berthed in Conwy for many years followed by 3 years in Holyhead. We bought a new boat in Dartmouth 5 years ago with the idea of sailing back up to Holyhead in the summer. However after a couple of months shmbo decided that we ought to keep her down south so we moved her into Brixham Marina. ^ months later she says why not move to Brixham ourselves. So we did. Two years on it is still the best thing we ever did. We moved from Burton upon Trent to Brixham, bought a similar sized house for what we sold the old one for in walking distance to the marina.
Best thing you can do is to relocate your boat to the South coast and try it for a year. The weather is better the sea flatter and I think that what we pay for Brixham is a little more than we would be paying in Conwy but the bertholder benefits (MDL freedom berthing and Passeport escales) far outweigh the extra. As I say try it.. Some towns particularly some of the pretty holiday villages can be very quiet through the winter but others can stay busy all year round.

for once can we stop on topic pls

But sir, he started it sir, honest :D

The greater Solent area is nice - but compared to where you are now, busy and expensive. It gets cheaper if you go eastwards eg Brighton, Eastbourne - but these places are cheap for a reason: there's nothing else (in boating terms) there. Or you can go west to Weymouth or Dartmouth and beyond, but then you're beginning to make the commute to the boat hard work. In your position I'd probably try a year in somewhere solenty that made the journey to the boat as easy as possible; Swanwick, perhaps. Only commit to a year and if it works out rubbish you can always just go back home.

hi jimmy we are thinking of moving the whole family ie so and daughter with partners as they can work anywhere in the uk ,and I am running away from work

To the West / SW of London will give you the most opportunities for work commuting and boat commuting. JTB is right - Solent has lots to do, go East and the options get sparse, and West, the traffic is bad. We were in the Solent for about 6 years - easy commute from West London. Good week-ending on the boat and a good base for heading West for longer trips and over to Channel Islands. Not sure how much better the weather is though.. wasn't good enough to stop us going to SoF!

Roy, why on earth do you want to swap the Welsh Med for Solent? Have you left your senses? Why not relocate to sunny Conwy full stop like moi? Every day is a holiday and work is not today, not Tuesday, nor Thursday, maybe next week, after my siesta. Get out of the Ghetto, get a nice river berth and millionaire views. No wonder you think it's sordid and grey squatting in the marina ghetto. That's not a healthy environment. Break free :encouragement:

Have been around the solent a few times in a small boat and all I could think was how terribly crowded it was... but each to their own

Its not crowded...its popular..... Having said that the trip right back up the Hamble to our berth can be a bit dodgem like but not killed anyone yet.....

If you're retired and can take the boat out in the week when the weather is good the Solent would be a much better place than for those of us that are restricted to a few weekends a year. If SS wants to experience the Solent then renting a house in one of the marina villages might be fun (e.g. Hythe or Port Solent) where he could keep the boat at the end of the garden. If I were to move to Hampshire I'd be heading for the New Forest and would keep the boat in Lymington I think.

But I suspect SS will hate the Solent in which case I reckon that south Devon would be a better bet for him. He could keep the boat in Dartmouth, Torquay or Brixham and enjoy cruising the West Country. The South Hams area would be a particularly nice place to live.

Do not move to the Isle of Wight, you'd hate it, property costs a fortune, moorings are expensive, traffic dreadful, weather awful, nowhere to go, no decent countryside, no lovely beaches, its truly awful. Stay well away.

Roy, grass is always greener. Let me remind you how good you have it here:
