You say it all worked for a while - then went off.
Doesn't sound to me like a positioning problem.

It sounds to me like the contractor has streatched the cables and you have a loose electrical connection on the fluxgate itself.

Just arrived on the boat, armed with 5core cable and a new fluxgate compass...

Dang. I have 100m drum of 8 core here in my office (as you do) but too late to post. If you draw a blank I can have 10m biked to FL southampton tomorrow. It would be there 11.30am I'd guess. Let me know.

Round sheath, 10mm dia, black, 8 coloured multistrand copper cores about the same 3 Ampish gauge as Raymarine Seatalk cables and not too weeny to use crimp or choc block connectors, no screening cores.

Without being rude, may I ask why you have 100m of cable in your office!

Exactly, Hurricane and djefabs. Just looking around my (London city overlooking St Pauls) office I see I have 100m of cable, two lumps of nice teak 50x180mm section, several small s/s fabrications, a Sykes Pickavant hydraulic puller for props and stabs and a spare Raymarine Gyro compass PCB card, just for starters. Far more interesting than all the spreadsheety powerpoint stuff that everyone else here seems to have in their offices. I also have a pair of girls jeans that I found on the boat at the end of summer, COH Brand (Citizens of Humanity, a Los Angeles brand), that I've been trying to find an owner for. I've asked all the girls in the office who have been on the boat but can't find an owner for them. Anyone on here been on Match and lost a pair of COH jeans? :D

That would get many city companies sued for sexual harassment. Better phrase that one carefully:)

Anyway, back here in the world, I've relocated the fluxgate compass, and I'm just about to head off down the Hamble to swing and align it, and see if it's any better...

Dont come over to this side of Lyme Bay it's been thick fog all day.

Bit foggy here in the Solent, but doable - about 2m vis. Now at anchor in Osborne Bay, generator running, kettle on, lovely.

When I pulled the floor up to get at the ap compass, what I found was that although they had moved it a bit, in fact they had only effectively moved it from being 58cm away from the aircon, to being 62 cm away from the aircon. Hmmm. Also, the ap compass was previously mounted on a lateral stringer (is that the right term? ie one that runs across the boat from port to stbd); and when they moved it, they moved it on to a fore-aft stringer.

When we spoke to Raymarine yesterday about moving the compass, they were at pains to point out that the orientation of the compass should not be altered; and the installation guide for the compass shows plenty of installation positions, but all in the same (lateral) orientation that mine was previously installed in.

So I've moved it so that it is now about 1.8m away from the aircon unit, and installed it on another lateral structure. I've swung the compass; deviation now down to 3deg; aligned it with cog, and coming over here (an admittedly short trip) it's fine so far. Once I've finished my jaffa cakes I shall head back to Swanwick and we'll see how it behaves.

Cheers

No .. but can I put a claim in for the Sykes hydraulic puller? I know a couple of guys who will have great fun adapting it for other uses ...
