It's possible to suggest you get the best of both worlds since you will avoid, or at least reduce, the roll inherent in a displacement motor boat. You will use less fuel and can still, hopefully, sail off downwind if the iron main should fail.
You know the old adage about the optimist and the pessimist and the glass that's half full/empty etc ? Motor sailers are a bit like that. If your a died-in-the-wool yotty they don't sail. Likewise if your into motor boats they don't motor well enough. If as you say you're a novice sailor and want to learm more, get yourself a well mannered sailing boat and learn. Motor sailers do have a niche, usually gentlemen of certain years who only want to sail occasionally but want to keep on the water. You don't sound like that. I'd go for a well mannered yacht and there's plenty of them in your price range.
I think that motor sailers get better as they get bigger. I never thought that I would end up owning one, but when i looked at the Halberdier I could see that both the hull shape and the huge ketch rig would pack in comfort and performance.
I gather you are coming down from Scotland to attend our Folly get together on the 7/8th of may so you can look over Fairweather ...(only joking!)
Seriously though the Halb wil hold off considerably slinkier boats of similar size just so long as you dont want to point too high, that not to say she wont point... just not as high as a Sigma!
You can pick up a decent one for 40 odd k and living up in the higher latidudes I guess you could extendl yr sailing season by months.
Claymore's Marcon is very similar( a few feet less OA) and the Barbary ketch also.
I thing there was a Halb for sale a while back in the land of Scots for around £45k, I know its a lot more than yr budget , but what the hell just stick it on the mortgage, in a year you wont even notice.
and you will see why I dont mind sailing in the rain snow and can cross the channel and get off at the other end with little more than a yawn and a stretch..
I run a yahoo group for all the world wide owners of the Halb so I know the location of quite a lot of the 30 or so that were built.
See you on the 7th!
All best Nick
PS there was asimply super one for sail in St Maatin for agive away price ( due weak $) I wish Id bought her an sailed back, most of the halbs around the world,,, Alaska /OZ/Canada have all sailed out on their own bottoms..

Alistair, I think you'll hate a motor sailor after being able to whizz about on a mobo. Get yourself a mobo that has some weather protection and move up to the Clyde a.s.a.p.
