I am looking for someone to do a pre-purchase survey on a Princess near Southampton - length 44', beam 14'.

The boat is currently out of the water but, assuming she passes the initial inspection would be launched for a sea trial.

Does anyone know a good surveyor and the sort of price that I should expect to pay for this service, and are there any things in particular that I should be looking for when appointing a surveyor?

Saunders Morgan-Harris are good.

I've no direct experience of Duncan Saunders, but several other Forumites have used him and speak highly of him. Hugo Morgan-Harris did the survey on my existing boat, back in the days when he worked for CE Proof, and did a first class job.

Can't help with price I'm afraid: it's normally linked to the size and type of boat. You don't always get what you pay for, but I'm confident that you will with either of these two guys.

The broker you are buying the boat from should be able to provide you with a comprehensive list of surveyors in the area.

PM me for further info if needed.

I've used Jim Pritchard before, and I think he's pretty good. If you're going for a separate engineers report as well then in round numbers you're probably in the region of £1k for the survey and engineers report, plus lift/launch costs.

Cheers
Jimmy

I have recently had a pre-purchase survey done by Richard Cray (Precision Yacht Surveying). I found him to be extremely helpful and professional and reasonably priced. If you need contact details for him feel free to PM me.

I have a list of local surveyors for Southampton.

PM me your email address and I shall send it over.

All are reasonably good and should have insurance.

Expect to pay about £10 per foot for the boat survey and then engineers report ontop (or thereabouts).

I've just had Jim Ptritchard survey my boat for my buyer and he picked up a couple of issues (grrrrrrrrrr) although to be fair you want someone to see faults on a boat your'e buying but not on the boat your selling!! So I'm using him to survey my new boat, similiar to yours in size. From my current experience I would recommend him. I have also used Jim before on my boat from a few years ago.
A rough cost of survey about £5-600 + VAT and £7 - 800 if you include engines. Plus lift in costs.
Hope it goes well...

For a full survey I always use Rob Perry Marine. Rob loves boats and is a good Powerboat man - he will tell you frankly what he finds and ensure you understand it. He is an enthusiastic surveyor!

But, if you want a proper engine/mechanical survey too (I had both) then get Volvopaul to do it. He knows his onions, speaks frankly and is very easy to deal with. Others on here, I am sure, will second this.

Good luck.

We have a survey going through on a 48ft boat, and we're using Jim Prichard for the main survey and VolvoPaul for the machinery.
