So what would you like the forum to change into, and what other forums do you use or is it face book taking over.

I last signed into Facebook 3 years ago.

Through the winter id like to see a bit more chat.... the nights are long and there is less to do on furlough...... so some chatty topics are good

This is the only social media that I’m on . I have been on a couple of other boat forums but that was a long time ago

To answer the first part of your question the only things I would prefer to change are to keep it friendly and not to let the social media blight of becoming argumentative creep in (there’s plenty of scope for that in the Lounge). The rest, such as sharing all things boaty, helping each other, a bit of laugh now and then etc, etc, is all good and we could probably do with more of it. Forums need contribution so the more that take the time to add cruise reports, upgrades and projects the better ?

I use FB but try to avoid the opinionated/argumentative stuff because just life is too short. I find it a great way to keep in touch with lots of people and it has been great for re-connecting with old mates, particularly from the RN and I am a member of various groups that are great for chat with like-minded folk.

Think the boaty sections of the forums have remained true to their original purpose, straying into "other" fields has either been humourous or tongue in cheek.

Face book account was set up for me by my kids during the summer .
Watched amazed and appalled as people I personally knew and had previously regarded as adults, argued .
Within a day it rapidily descended into an vicious acrimonious spat that would have disgraced toddlers in a nursery.
The conseqences still reverberate 6 months later.
These were people in their 50s and 60s, the youngsters stayed well away.
Old people seem to nurse grudges like children.......... out it all came with a vengence.

Facebook a good idea ? ...shame about some of the users :)

The Facebook based boating groups seem somewhat more social and friendlier than here, they don't seem to suffer from quite as many old codgerisms either, as a result they do seem to have more female participants, something this place has notoriously failed to achieve. They also appear to be much better at either not attracting or swiftly dealing with the irrelevant political gruff (often related to Europe) that a few on here feel the need to post on every possible occasion/thread - in short they are much more proactively and competently moderated. On the other hand they are not as good for for more technical advice possibly because the Facebook platform seems to mean that conversations are quickly lost from sight.

I’m just reorganizing my workshop. I have about forty plastic bins that I’ve labeled, a bin for every type of tool or spare part etc. Enough bins to not only have a bin for screwdrivers but one for old screwdrivers and one for new. A bin for metric spanners and one for SAE.
But at the end of the day there are still bits left over, things hard to categorize, things I have too few of, things I don’t know what they are. And as much as it pains me I have to make a bin for odds and sods.
Sometimes on the forum, I might have a very minor inquiry, or comment I want to make, but it’s not worth starting a thread over. And it’s not always polite to hijack another thread.
So my idea is to have an ‘odds and sods’ thread, where any minor, unrelated, orphaned subject can go

One thing I have noticed on this forum is it’s difficult to upload photos direct from iPhones etc as the file sizes are too large now from modern phones. It’s a royal pain to resize, if there’s any easier way let me know.

I hate Facebook and don't use it at all
Some great groups in FB , for a start there are two Volvopenta ones , one of which was set up by Nick Vass a surveyor I work with , I gave some input into it .
Volvopenta Victims also gets a lot of hits , a group to discuss all angles of problems with some great feedback from all over the world as well as the UK .
I often see people from this forum on both sites asking the same questions, I can tell you it gets a lot more useful feedback than on this forum plus I can post pictures in seconds to help people , screenshots from workshop manual and parts epc , where this stupid place rejects photos and files too easily making the whole job a lot harder to the point I’ve given up replying these days to a lot of posts .
The upload speed to this site is so slow it’s impossible to type sometimes.
Go take a look on FB BP , Volvopenta victims and Volvopenta yacht and boat owners .

As I’ve said I’ve given up on loading photos waste of time trying .
I could input this forum on a daily basis with some of my findings at work but because it’s how it is it’s bloody pointless , this forum is slowly dying in favour of other sites .

While VP makes a really valid point about uploading photos, ultimately this forum is as good as the contributions. This forum has been a wonderful resource to me over the years, and I’ve met some brilliant people who will remain friends for life. However fir me it has become more like The Lounge which I used to visit, but gave up on several years ago, as a few folk were just unnecessarily stupid or aggressive. I just don’t need that. some Facebook warriors can be the same, so I choose not to engage. There have been many wonderful threads on here spanning an immense range of motor boating sections. Waynesworlds sleeves rolled up rebuilds, Vas’s incredible journey with MiToS and JFM’s 2 Match builds are a few examples, but there are many more. When threads like this get loaded, I will be all over them.

Don’t forget Bouba’s passerelle ??
