Following up the Suunto watch, have now bought some software to play with. Visual Passage Planner and PocketStars.
VPP has the windrose almanacs for the Atlantic and Pacific contained within and you can do some nifty passage plans trading off boat speed vs frequency of gales, etc. Does great circle routing as well as other long distance routing functions.
PS has the celestial almanac contained within and does the sextant calculations for you. Also calculates distances from any point of lat/long to another. Has a rather nice looking celestial sky that updates itself in real time.
Can't wait to have play with PS later this year, I can tune up my rusty sextant skills and not have to worry about the interminable sums that inevitably follow a sight.
Neither much use if your horizon is the far side of the Channel but if you are going further afield......
