More Hustler 35!

Following my anguished plea - thanks to all those who offered some thoughts.

The concensus seems to be excellent boat if a bit wet - could be cramped but buy it.

On the one I looked at I wouldn't have said cramped - the cockpit was large and deep - the salon was large and the table retracted (although not quite headroom clearance for me (6') - chart table was large and the galley was good but...

Wife thinks heads was too small and there is no usable double cabin.

Given that the overall aspects of the boat were positive but Wife needs to be placated the following questions need to be addressed.

1. How can I convince her this is a very good opportunity.
2. If I can't, what would your ideal blue water cruiser/liveaboard boat be?

Any answers?

Ah - the point is - what are you going to use her for. If it is as a liveabord boat, then you may never persuade the memsahib that the heads etc are big enough.

If it is as a first boat - prior to pushing off into the blue, then it would be a suitable opportunity to prove that she likes sailing,

I think its important to get consensus - or you will regret it ever more

Precisely Chris

So - if maybe she can't see that the advantages (seakindliness etc) outweigh the disadvantages (not sleeping together) - what boat would be a good alternative for blue water, liveaboard cruising?

Some may not like this but Bavaria claim their 32 is suitable - certainly internally this meets SWMBO's criteria - inc shower!

Re: Precisely Chris

Hope nico is not watching - buy a bavaria if you are not worried about sea keeping or its resale price after 10 years of hard use.

I have a brick shithouse that will go anywhere - however wife won't! so will be reduced to carfully planned short hops to fulfil my dreams of sailing into the blue - I might as well have had a BAV!

What is your budget - you could get a Victory 40 like mine for £50 -60K - loads of room - privacy - big heads x2, and fast (once its blowing)

The older boats do take a lot more looking after - but if you live aboard then its great to have something to do!

My sympathy is with SWYMBO.

If you are over 30, a decent long range cruiser for two MUST have a decent double bed. Where are your priorities??

You aren't dragging her kicking and screaming into this, by any chance? Is she doing the pursed-lipped number when you try to discuss which two dresses she's going to keep when you Sell Up and Sail? Or is she enthusiastically practicing to kneed home-made bread? (If she thinks it's a good excuse for another recipe book, she simply hasn't got the message).

Scuttlebutt's often served as an agony aunt for problem relationships (he's in - she's out). My advice, go with what she wants now, if you want her. If and when she starts to see why a Hustler 35 might have been a good choice after all, the money lost on selling the Bav will have been money well spent.

Re: Hustler???

Ah yes, I remember it well.

In the days when Hustler was very daring (everything is very daring now) I stayed in a NY hotel which was furnished with the local telephone directory, Gideon's Bible, Hustler and a vibrating bed.

Well, you know how you wake up early with the jet lag...
