Since my last problem was obviously far too easy, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction with this.

When my PC manufacturer was threatening to make me re-install the OS, it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to finally get around to backing up my data. According to Windows XP I should have a backup utility called Backup at Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools but no such beast is in evidence there or elsewhere.

Any suggestions please?

you can find it at C:/Windows/System32/ntbackup.exe. If not you can download it HERE.

Hope this is what your looking for.

But i would reccommend using Norton Ghost or something similar.

There are lots of backup programmes available on the web. If you can't locate a backup programme on your PC then go to the HP website and look for downloads. If you need to choose a PC model then the Pavilion zt1121s will do. Find the HPRecord Now product and download. This will sort you out.

Hi Dave

Specialised backup utilities usually use compression and have all sorts of bells and whistles. However, for most people's requirements these are overkill.

Backing up your data is only a question of copying the relevant folders to another place - most commonly a CD, an external hard drive or another PC on your network. It is often quicker and simpler just to locate these folders and use drag and drop to back them up.

For most people the My Documents folder and the mail store folder pretty much cover it.

To find your mail store folder in Outlook Express:

Tools . . . Options . . . Maintenance . . . and then clicking the Store Folder button. This gives you the name of the folder where your mail is currently stored.

As far as backup tools go - if you feel the need then I use a freebie called Karen's Replicator - get it HERE - which is very easy to use.

Hope this helps.

After much scratching about in help files and on Microsoft web sites I have discovered that Backup is not by default installed along with XP. So, although other help files show you where it ought to be (there is even a handy video to show you how to use it) you needn't bother looking if you weren't able to do a custom install i.e. if your PC manufacturer installed XP for you.

Thanks to all for advice.
