I have been allocated a spot on the River Orwell about 3/4 mile downstream from Pin Mill. So now I am faced with the prospect of laying my own mooring.....

I think the bottom is Mud (I would be very surprised if it isn't) and the boat is a 39ft, 15 ton long keeler. What do you chaps think would be the best system to use and what weight of sinker should I be using?

Actually I will probably get one of the yards up there to lay the mooring but I would value forum members' opinions so that I have some idea what I am talking about when I go to see them.......

The guys in the yard that lay the moorings in this area will tell you exactly what you want for your weight of boat.

I can’t help with you question, but as some one who is hoping to find moorings on the Orwell in the near future I’d be very interested to know how you went about getting to the point your now at and what sort of costs are involved.

Best of luck with the information you seek.

Colin

Re: Weight of the sinker??

Moorings are not working on the same way than anchors. Anchors hold due to the anchor surface area buried into the soil.. A 20 kg anchor, well buried into a good bottom, can hold more than one ton.. Lying in the sea ground, its holding will not be more than 40 kg.. Moorings holding is related to the weight of the sinker..

A 39 ft/ 15 tons boat could pull up to 1100 daN with a force 9 wind (45 knots) and your sinker should be able to sustain this force. As concrete in the water will only weight 55% of its weight in air, your bloc of concrete should weight about 2000 kg ( 0,800 cubic meter).

I supose too that the bottom on the river Orwell should be mud. After some time, the bloc of concrete would bury it self into the mud, giving an extra holding..

Of course, all elements: chains, swivels, shackle.. should have at least the same working resistance.

All info are into my book "Tout savoir sur le mouillage".. the German version will be published soon and we are working hard on the English one..

You may have laid it by now but here's my experience. At Gravesend Sailing Club we have a variety of deepwater moorings (River Thames). Some have concrete sinkers made by members, some have been improvised in the past-- eg. weights off a fork lift, rumour has it that the wheels were left on and thats why it dragged. I got the PLA to lay mine. I was concerned about it dragging etc. and suggested a 2t on sinker. They said a ton was all they used on much larger boats than mine, a Sigma 33. I never saw them lay it but so far--three years later it has been fine. I had it checked by a diver last year and he gave it the thumbs up.I replaced the top 8ft which were very slightly worn. Said there was a bloody great ships anchor on the end. At wind against tide the boat sometimes surged forward and chafed the topsides. EYE made me up an inflatable buoy with a nylon strop throught the middle, 16mm I think, and this has been perfect.
