RobF,
out of pure interest, as I don't operate in the Bristol Channel let alone Portishead, how does one book that far ahead without knowing how the weather will be ?
It's not irrelevant here in the magic Solent, if one visits the otherwise interesting ' Port Solent ' marina at the northern end of Portsmouth, it's a lock to get in - usually fine - but can be hours on the waiting list to get out and back home, wondering about the tide !
It's like Port Solent. There can be a waiting list when locking out, but not when locking in. I live in North Bristol and reckoned it was about an hour between leaving home, and casting off the mooring lines. So I just booked the lock out as I was leaving home for one hour hence. Most of my trips were from Portishead down to Cardiff and back. Came back on the flood tide and so arrived at HW, often when there was free flow. You don't need to book it up days in advance, but if you ask at the spur of the moment when on the boat, there might be a small queue. Nothing like as bad as Chichester marina.
I have to confess that I normally drive to Port Solent (from Northney where my boat is based). One of these days I'll go by sea, but the main attraction is the play park and ice cream shop - and my five year olds prefer a 20min car journey to a 4 hour boat trip.
