Does anyone have any information about berthing and laying up around the St. Malo area, or further west. Any recommendations or helpful advice would be gratefully received.

1. St Malo - tel 0033 299 56 51 91 moorings inside locked Bassin Vaubin or in Avant Port, both commercial
2. St Malo - tel 0033 299 81 71 34 Port de Bas Sablons, port de plaisance to starboard of the 2m dredged channel
3. Dinan - tel 0033 296 39 56 44, office open only 9-12 out of season 15M up the Rance, nice town.
4. Dinard - tel 0033 299 46 65 55, interesting entrance down a 1m dredged channel, but a great town.
5. St Cast - tel 0033 296 41 88 34 on buoys, in 1.2m
6. Le Dahouet - tel 0033 296 72 82 85 cilled marina, entry 2.5 hrs either side HW, 2.5m, entry not advisable after dark (unlit), impossible in NW >F6. Nice clean, well-appointed little marina.
7. Binic - tel 0033 296 73 61 86 - on buoys in avant port for drying boats, locked Plaisance 1.5-2m, entry light controlled about 3hrs from HW - speak with Francois le Tetre he's the lock operator.
8. St Quay-Portrieux & Port d 'Armor - the old port dries, but the St Armor port de plaisance is easy to enter at all times and all winds except NW >F8 & has 2-3m on reasonable pontoons, but limited, expensive room for visitors, tel 0033 296 70 81 30 - Eric Tabarly's home port.

This takes you down about 40M W of St Malo.

In support of Richard's point - the N Brittany coast is magnificent but very challenging - tidal streams and ranges are far greater than you will have experienced (tho' they reduce the farther you get from Cotentin), and visibility and weather are very changeable.
The S Brittany coast is far kinder, and IMHO, considerably better sailing, with far more accessible harbours, less Atlantic swell and more sun.
If it weren't quite so crowded I'd compare it with the W Isles od Scotland or the Rias of Galicia (though different to both).
"Go" operate(d) a cheap flight into la Rochelle which is another alternative cruising area.
