Hi,

I have recently bought a new (to me) boat which is based in Woodbridge at the moment.

I would like to get the engine looked over before the winter proper but do not have any local knowledge (I am based in Leigh and that will be her first voyage)

Could anyone recommend a mobile Engineer who could look over and service a Yamner engine?

The boat is on the hard and the engine would need to be run up with a fresh water hose.

Many thanks for any help

Regards

Steve

Gerald Abbot travels around a lot although mainly works in Pin Mill/Ipswich. Mobile 07880 721193, try giving him a ring.

THE man on the Deben is Peter Norris of Peter Norris Marine Engineering Ltd.
He looks after most of the engines in boats at Larkmans etc.
He has fettled or installed engines in three boats for me.
V. Highly recommended.

Another vote for Peter Norris. Absolutely excellent - really knows what he's doing.

He has looked after our engines in three successive boats since 1998 in Woodbridge / Melton. Send a PM if you would like his landline/mobile numbers.

Before you spend money... have a look at it yourself... I tend to think thqt when at sea... your life may depend on the donk so you should know and trust it. Doing the work yourself, you know how well done it is.

Yamnars are very good units though they have a couple of issues...

Is it FW or raw cooled? either way look for signs of leaking on the seawater pump shaft. Brown streaks will give it away. I have rebuilt these... send a PM if y need help.
There is an oil pipe that goes round the back of the engine from behind the starter to feed the rockers. It goes underneath the FW interchanger which has a habit of leaking a bit. Consequence is the oil pipt rusts (yes it is made of ordinary steel instead of bronze!!). Check for signs of rust..
Look for any signs of water in the fuel and especially bug
Check fan belts.. also check the condition of the pulleys for rust.. otherwise they can wear the belts very fast as the rust cleans off..
dip the oil and rub it between your fings. if the black sticks to your fingerprints.... the oil is very ovloaded with carbon and in poor condition... not a good sign
look inside the oil fillr for signs of emulsified oil
change the oil using a vacum pump.
change the filter.

It should start...

Not sure how well the owner of the yard views the idea of outside engineers on his patch. Depends on which yard but well worth checking.
My answer is not dissimilar to Tomahawk. I get a good guy to do it while I'm there or to supervise me while I do it.

Thanks Tomahawk,

I am embarrassed to say that I am an ex Merchant Navy Marine Engineer, so doing as you suggested should, in theory, be fairly easy (assuming the grey cells still work :-) ).

The problem is that the boat is 60 odd miles from me and there is only so much time available for sorting the boat, sorting the house, working and maintaining a family life over the winter.

I have contacted Peter Norris and he has agreed to have a look for me.

Thanks again

Steve
