My crew consist of my wife and children, they have some idea how to handle the boat and i intend to improve their skills.

However, in the meantime i have instructed them how to read the GPS and put up a Pan Pan if i fall overboard, i have told them to send the Pan Pan before they attemp to rescue me, who agrees this is correct.

Suppose it depends on the circumstances. If you fell in in the marina and just needed the steps lowering on the swim platform a pan pan might be a bit over the top!!

Technically, it's now changed to a MayDay first.

Human nature says attempt rescue first.

It all depends on the conditions and where you are.

Thats been argued till the cows come home. I would not mess about with the formalitise and just shout May Day.

So you're dying in the water whilst SWMBO works out A) where the VHF is B) how to switch it on and C) what to say and then she'll forget to press the transmit button anyway, all the while as your boat dissapears over the horizon at 20knots. Then when she finally manages to turn the boat around she'll run you over anyway
Personally, I would major on some MOB training and boat handling skills first

i agree with Deleted User. In uk waters, stop the boat, turn round or back it up. Turn off engines whenever close by. If dad is deadish, rope on and go and gettim, otherwise he will swim up to boat but ONLY when engines are audiably off. It ain't like the fender when you need to "reach it with boat hook" - or go round - near enough is near enough.

But of course, not many people spontaneously fall in when at helm at sea. They fall in whilst helping with rear line outside the harbour, and backing the boat up will run it aground.

So, boat handling and "awareness" a much better idea than "limited rules" such as "if i fall overboard just do xyz dearest" regarding vhf.

Note that you can't just bosh thru a panapan/mayday and then go and help pa: the radio peeps ask for seelonce then repeat, then more details then blablah could have gottim out by now....

Mike, my boat certainly won't be disappearing at 20 kts! I wish! There should always be someone on board who can retrieve a casualty, or at least get the boat back to him/her, unless you are single handed so shouldn't have gone overboard in the first place. Picking up divers is good practice for this so is now second nature.

I would say at least have a go at getting mob back into the boat before making mayday call, should only take a minute or less, then if cannot retrieve him, make the call. It will obviously take the rescue services quite some time to arrive so IMHO better to make the attempt first. If the water's cold, which it will be to any casualty, those early minutes could make all the difference.

BTW called into Teignmouth on Friday, they now have a nice new visitors pontoon about 50 yards away from the Ship Inn.
