Mizzen stay sail

I'm thinking of ringing a mizzen stay sail.
How long should the foot be?
Assuming that its tack to the mizzen mast is also a J (or J1?) length, should it be J or J+ ?

We have just had a new one made. We never fly it with the mizzen so we sheet ours from the end of the mizzen boom. This makes it pretty large, we use it with apparent wind behind the beam. Ours is the same area as the mainsail

My friend has a mizzen stay sail on his ketch which is great for adding a bit of extra umph in light winds. From memory, he tacks it to the foot of the mizzen mast and to a point roughly level with the main mast. I would ask a sail maker what he recommends for you.

That's more or less the fixings we used to use on Donald Searle when I sailed her. Halyard on the Mizzen mast, Tack down on the deck beside the main mast and sheet the clew to the boom of the Mizzen.

It's a lovely sail on a Ketch, but I might not use it single handed.
