Misuse of For Sale section

I agree with Steve about the E-Bay links. When people post links to E-Bay it's because they are hoping to get more people bidding; I don't believe it's because of some benevolent wish to make other people aware of the auction.

As far as I am concerned I think that the "For Sale" forum is for people who are want to sell things to other forumites. When I want to look on E-Bay then I do so; but I think these links are not part of the "spirit" of the forum.

As an aside, I think that the £200 limit should be increased!

Because the forum policy says so ...

Banning commercial advertising seems like a good thing to me: I get more than enough of that elsewhere, not least in PBO itself. The forums are, however, a great place for "word of mouth" advertising from genuinely satisfied customers (and "anti-advertising" from genuinely dissatisfied customers!) This seems to be to be a strength of the forums which we should strive to keep.

The "For Sale" forum allows a bit of gentle "boat jumbling" between forumites and is worth keeping for that purpose. Do we really want to be rigorous about the £200 limit? I don't think so and Kim & co seem to turn a very appropriate Nelsonian eye to occasional breaches of that limit. Similarly, if a regular forumite wants to draw our attention to something being sold elsewhere - whether on e**y or somewhere else - which they think might interest us that seems to me to be an extension of the principle in the right direction.

So, keep blatant commercial advertising out but allow regular users some discretion to use their forums within the spirit of the rules.

Re: blatent misuse of For Sale section

Have to agree Tome but you know these confuser engineers - straight lines - and all that, things in thier place and places for things !!!!!!!!!

Thisle I fully agree with you but would add a proviso that if the For Sale forum became a list of such notices rather than items for sale it should be looked at again. As it is at present the balance appears about right and after all no one can make me bid if I don't want to.

Perhaps raising the price limit might encourage people to offer items direct rather than at auction. Any thoughts on this Kim?

Yes, I agree. As a group we're obviously keeping it under constant review anyway - a very healthy state of affairs.

How about a nice simple fix.... given the small number of posts in the for sale forum, make it moderator approved..... so any post needs accepting.... there are rarely more than half a dozen new posts in a day....

If a few of the elder statesmen (for that read - trusted /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) of this forum would be prepared to volunteer as moderators, then any one of a number of people could approve a post, causing small delay, and yet not imposing too much on any individual....

And we could have a very interesting debate here on what 'rules' to place as guides for the moderators.....

Come on YBW... how about letting your readers protect your forum.... democracy in practice.....

It's probably not that easy. Kim looked into giving me moderator status for the Mercury meet forum, but it proved impossible to give me that status without making me a moderator for the whole site, and access to behind the scenes across the whole site, which for a non IPC employee is clearly not on. Maybe things would be a little different with the new forum software. There was also the issue that IPC would have qualms about non IPC employees having a moderator status even on one forum

Just as well it's not your decision then /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Kim did look into it quite seriously, as would have reduced overhead on both his and my time, but just wasn't doable for practical reasons, as well as concerns about non employees having moderator access.

Besides, who are you to talk about being grumpy after the hard time you've been giving Mike and Jon! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd be happy to offer to become an IPC employee to help moderate this or other forums /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well this is all news to me. Never seen a For Sale Section on this forum, How do I find it?
Thanks

Click on the 'Main Index' link at top centre of page..... or at bottom right, look for the 'jump to' link, and click on the arrow to pull up a clickable list. Either will give you a list of all the forums on this site.

Re: Dear Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells...

I must be thick........where is this for sale section?.....can't find it at all. Can somebody give me a clue please......sounds well worth a look.

Thanks.....................Charlie

Two ways of finding the \"For Sale\" forum...

If you look up towards the top of the page, under the funny yellow/orange panels there's a couple of lines of text links. First one on the top line says "Main Index". Click on it, then scroll down about 2/3 of the page and you'll see the "For Sale" forum.

Or, look down the page, to the bit on the right where it says "Jump to" (no, I don't understand it either), click on the little blue arrow under "Jump to", then highlight the "For Sale" line, then click on the "Jump" button.
