Missing yachtswoman in South west.

I wonder why we're not getting any updated information from CG, RNLI, Police etc?
Probably because they have already advised that they are no longer looking for her. Doubt there will be anything more "official" unless a body is found. Media will no longer be interested unless there is a story.

not quite as bizarre

The press coverage of this really does bring home how sensationalist and inaccurate popular journalism is. Its almost bordering on the criminal.

not quite as bizarre as some of th posts on here of course

mind you....

I am in favour of speculation

in the absensce of all the facts it is only by testing theories and holidng them up for scrutinisation that you can learn what might have happened

of course you could just stick to the facts.... but that might make for a fairly thin narrative

Sad; and upsettingly frustrating.
Even more "SAD" that that is the media's usual attitude.

Not at all. They are there (in part) to report new things. If there is nothing new there is nothing to report. However, if there is not much going on then some may start to speculate which sells newspapers, but does not necessarily inform.

I'm going to log-off this thread because as I stated some pages ago the threads tend to stray from the OP. That is not to say I don't find the "straying" informative/provocative/incisive.
As just threaded above, if we don't explore and test, we may miss out on solutions/theories etc.

As for this current deviation from the OP, may I say I used to be in Newspaper Distribution (Wholesale); it was ALWAYS accepted that "bad news sells newspapers".
I would have thought, and hoped (especially given the HUGE interest on this Forum) that the media would have kept a trail going.
Ah well.

there is nothing wrong with speculation as long as the base facts are retained. The issue as I see it is that the base facts were not retained, they were distorted and it would appear invented. That does nothing to aid constructive speculation that we all can learn from, it is simply speculative gossip mongering.

Rant over

As Jimi says.. Our thoughts go out to her family but if we can all learn something from this the better..

If something was wrong with the boat.. then perhaps we'll learn not to put off important maintenance tasks that we should otherwise have completed..

I sincerely hope we do learn something from this whatever it may be.

That's another option of course - an 'Ouzo' type incident being run down by something bigger; all the more chance for a singlehander who simply can't keep a 360 degree lookout all the time.

Bearing that incident in mind, out of interest, how close to Longships do the Rosslare to Cherbourg ferries (Irish Ferries) normally come in good weather? Or do all large ships stay well offshore at all times?

Ais and Radar

guess there is a web site with ais tracks for the time period 19:00 to say 02:00

for the area sat evening / night? Would have thought coast guard would have checked that also would there be radar logs for the Landsend tss area ?

Yep, I should have looked at chart before posting :) (I'd forgotten about the TSS)

There's a TSS for commercial shipping, incl. ferries, off Lands End.

(Edit: should type faster)

Without commenting on the specific incident, our own AIS would be checked as part of the initial search. Of course, a large number of pleasure vessels don't carry AIS.

There is no radar surveillance of the Lands End TSS (or indeed any other area outside the Dover TSS).

For info, just had a look at the AIS for Oscar Wilde ferry, that night it appears to have been around 5 miles offshore.

the edge of the TSS is just under 3 miles off Longships, no need for a small craft to go near it when rounding Lands End even outside Longships.

What I find a bit strange is that wreckage was found at Sennen, cos by then most of the dangers on the inshore route have been passed and it just a case of heading north until its time to head east. My theory is that she went to shake out a reef in the falling wind once clear of main dangers and slipped overboard. The boat then ran itself aground.
