In fairness, guys, these forums are quite active a lot of the time, so messages that are posted at quiet times can just get pushed down the list and go almost unnoticed. I seldom read any of the forums explicitly, prefering to look at the "Today's Posts" link - anything more than two days old is several pages down the list and will get missed.

I was referring to you.

Anyway, I'm not on-line for a few days, so I'll leave you to enjoy your self-satisfaction on your own.

OK, just popping over to the Malaysian 777 thread for a little more hand wringing and self-satisfaction.

Seem to be quite a few of us there, all trying to 'look good'.

Sorry, I don't know if this has been put on here but just in case.

On January 15th 2014 Dutch sailor Sietse Hagen left the port of Tenerife heading for the Caribbean islands. Since his departure, now over 60 days ago, he has not reported home. His friends and family, as well as the Dutch sailing community, are deeply concerned about the well-being of this very experienced sailor. He has been reported missing at the local authorities, but your help by keeping a lookout for his boat would be very much appreciated.

Sietse is sailing a 27ft Gib'Sea Flush Poker named ‘Pokerface’, small but well prepared for long voyages. Distinctive properties are its doghouse and black painted stern

I'm in support of the original poster whose post in one of genuine concern for a fellow sailor. He is not asking us all to put to sea but posts as he says "just in case" we may be able to help. I can't personally help but there may be folks here who have friends sailing in Tenerife or the Caribbean who they can ask to keep an extra lookout and network the area. Nice to know that if ever I was overdue there would be some like Nostradumus who would do the same for me. Concerning though are some of the posts of some others.

It is not about 'response'. The debate began when Nostro pointed out the number of VIEWINGS of this thread compared with a similarly timed thread on the subject of a marine bog.

Not being able to respond is one thing, a complete apparent lack of interest in the subject, as indicated by the thread title, is something else.

The Atlantic is a big place. Do you think he would have got more or fewer views if he had headed the thread "Missing Sailor Between Tenerife and the Caribbean"?

I think the problem here was that the forum got criticised for being more interested in toilets than someone lost in the Atlantic. its the criticism that's caused the problem. pointlessly saying I hope he is ok isnt much help to anyone. so i dont really know what you wanted people to say or do

Well, to be fair, Dylan had a look at Littlehampton, and I'll check Kirkcudbright later today, so that's a start.

Do you mind if I ask what you were hoping to get from your original post? Despite what Wikipedia might say, most of the waters around Britain & Ireland, where most posters on the Scuttlebutt forum sail (when not posting), are not refered to as the Atlantic. The posters on this forum are unlikely to be able to offer practical helpso it can't have been a surprise when there were no such offers of help.

I presume you've also posted on more relevent forums elsewhere.
Social media has overthrown governments before, you never know. "unlikely to be able to offer practical help" , doesn't matter if it's extraordinarily unlikely, someone might be in trouble out there, spreading the word might help. If you can't then why not ignore it and hope for the best.

And yes, the word has been spread on other forums, if I was missing out there I'd be very glad to think that people like nostrodamus exist and are willing to try to help, however unlikely the avenues might be.

I suspect there may have been fewer views had it been more specific. A more general "Can you help find this missing sailor?" might have got more views, but as maby says once something has drifted down off the first page of posts it is less likely to be viewed.

Hi to all,
I'm Timo, a Dutch sailor, new on this forum. I'll introduce myself later on, some matters are more urgent now.
I have initiated the international request for help in order to try to find Sietse Hagen, the missing Dutch sailor. Nostradamus was so kind to forward our search to this forum, for which I'm greatfull. However, it may be needed - gving some of the replies over here - to explain a little bit further what our intentions and expectations are. Our goal is simple: to obtain any information on the wherabouts of Sietse and/or his boat. Of coarse the authorities have been alerted, but the use of social media have proven to be very effective in situations where we just don't know exactly where to look. Sietse himself was a very frequent and honored visitor of the Dutch sailors' forum (www.zeilersforum.nl) , also because of his long experience as a sailor accros the globe. Therfore, we have posted the search request on several fora where many sailors gather. Hence our posting over here.

I don't expect anyone to go out looking at the local UK yachtclub, but many over here are under way themselves or know sailors who are. You may have hearded of a sighting of a boat adrift, a stranding, a dismasted boat, well.... you can imagine yourself. In the old days this may have reached the local newspaper, today such news may reach Sietses' family who are in the deepest uncertanty right now. PLEASE keep posting this thread but don't make it a laughing matter, it's not. It's just a matter of sailors helping other sailors, even if it's as small as putting up a notice at your harbour or retweeting the message on Sietse. Thank you for your help, let's hope for the best.

Just wondering if you have a photo of the boat and if possible an idea as to where you think it was headed, etc.

I'm sure everyone will be delighted to help you and thanks for the explanation/information - all that happened above was with so little to go on, nobody had much idea what practical things they could do to help
