Sorry, I don't know if this has been put on here but just in case.

On January 15th 2014 Dutch sailor Sietse Hagen left the port of Tenerife heading for the Caribbean islands. Since his departure, now over 60 days ago, he has not reported home. His friends and family, as well as the Dutch sailing community, are deeply concerned about the well-being of this very experienced sailor. He has been reported missing at the local authorities, but your help by keeping a lookout for his boat would be very much appreciated.

Sietse is sailing a 27ft Gib'Sea Flush Poker named ‘Pokerface’, small but well prepared for long voyages. Distinctive properties are its doghouse and black painted stern

I don't think anybody is expecting anything to be done.

However, the apparent lack of interest in even viewing the thread is rather surprising - to say the least.

What do you expect anyone who is not in "the Atlantic" to do about it?

+1

I really cannot believe you have just said that.. disgusting.
Disgusting is a bit harsh.
The story is troubling and sad but the fact is that threads disappear when there are no comments and there is not really anything useful that people can contribute on this subject. Expressions of sympathy don't help the poor guy.

There are plenty ?300+? views so there is interest but it is to the forum's credit that people are resisting making pointless speculation.

Just so the guys family are aware that as many sailors as possible have been made aware may be of comfort. If i was them I would be trying every channel available to get information about what is or has been done and that may well include looking at forums or getting sailing friends to do so. It shows concern for one of our own and if by any sleight chance the message gets to someone who may assist then it has been worth it.

At one time the members of the forum would have shown interest and concern.... As Chinita says..a sign of the times.

The reply from Jumble duck was... well make your own mind up.

I will say no more

Ravi,

My dear old thing. 300 views over three days is nothing.

Nostro's point is not about the lack of posts/comments. One can accept that viewers may not be able to offer any meaningful contribution; however, it is about the general lack of interest in even bothering to open the thread. Do you understand that?

So, I am looking at the Scuttlebut.

'Hmmm, Sailor Missing in Atlantic; yeah, ok, big deal - yawn - now what's this?? Wow, a thread about a Baby Blake!!! Hey, yeah, let's have a look at this!!!'

Well...

The thread was appropriately titled which meant anyone not in the Atlantic probably thinks they have little to offer. That said, there are plenty of folks on the West Coast and the Channel and I'd guess he departed from somewhere down there so may have had to return there. You'd think he'd have called in if that was the case but there is the possibility that someone would see him before he was in range...

A thread entitled "Missing Sailor" would get lots of views. One entitled "missing sailor in Atlantic", predictably would get fewer than one about a toilet. I do understand that. Sorry if it makes you think of me as a bad person.

I generally assume that anybody starting or promoting this sort of thread is doing it in a spirit of lip-smacking, doom-mongering, smug, self-righteousness schadenfreude. I have seen nothing here to change that opinion. It's the forum equivalent of old ladies on the bus gleefully sharing stories of acquaintances' urinary tract infections.

According to Wikipedia, the Atlantic Ocean has an area of over forty one million square miles. How many of those forty one million square miles, OP, did you expect to reach with this thread?
