I generally assume that anybody starting or promoting this sort of thread is doing it in a spirit of lip-smacking, doom-mongering, smug, self-righteousness schadenfreude. I have seen nothing here to change that opinion. It's the forum equivalent of old ladies on the bus gleefully sharing stories of acquaintances' urinary tract infections.

According to Wikipedia, the Atlantic Ocean has an area of over forty one million square miles. How many of those forty one million square miles, OP, did you expect to reach with this thread?

OK, that's fine.

So, when you **** up and get lost because you can't tell large scale from small scale we will all keep our gobs shut.

Can't wait!

I have just checked the boats here in Littlehampton while walking the dog

no sign of him here

so that narrows it down a tad

I just cannot see how some of you fail to understand the importance of threads such as these

Such wit.

Read the OP again and ask yourself how your family would be feeling if you were the yachtsman in question.

It is certainly a serious matter for all concerned and like everyone else I have my fingers crossed for a happy outcome, however like several others I didn't respond to the OP as there was feck all I can do.

I cannot believe that reports of a missing sailor gets less views than a second hand toilet!!!

Do you mind if I ask what you were hoping to get from your original post? Despite what Wikipedia might say, most of the waters around Britain & Ireland, where most posters on the Scuttlebutt forum sail (when not posting), are not refered to as the Atlantic. The posters on this forum are unlikely to be able to offer practical help so it can't have been a surprise when there were no such offers of help.

I presume you've also posted on more relevent forums elsewhere.

It is not about 'response'. The debate began when Nostro pointed out the number of VIEWINGS of this thread compared with a similarly timed thread on the subject of a marine bog.

Not being able to respond is one thing, a complete apparent lack of interest in the subject, as indicated by the thread title, is something else.

The comment you have highlighted is referring to 'views' not 'offers of practical help'.

Do you understand the difference?

I tell you what I do understand. The difference between someone trying to help someone else and someone wailing and tearing their shirt to try to make themselves look good.

Amazing!

So the Op started the thread to 'look good'!

I think the problem here was that the forum got criticised for being more interested in toilets than someone lost in the Atlantic. its the criticism that's caused the problem. pointlessly saying I hope he is ok isnt much help to anyone. so i dont really know what you wanted people to say or do
