MIRABELLA V AGROUND!!

Re: Dragging anchor

Just goes to show consensus of opinion on this forum over the years has been correct.

Bruces were designed for oil rigs, and great when you can put several of them down in different directions, with divers to make sure they are embedded ok. Not a great deal of use for boats that swing though!

Re: tosspots

Can't have dragged anchors - they were built here in NZ so they will be undraggable /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Just had a chat with a friend who saw her being built to let him know, he reminded me that one of his VT built boats was put aground (serious damage) during trials - jinx maybe, rabbits on board?

Hope they have taken the Ships Cat off to safety.

Re: ah

As I said, had same thoughts. Should have had someone on watch. No excuse on boat worth that much. And easy to do with loads of crew, some of which would recognise signs of dragging. Or even gps watch.

and as I also said, glad to see pro's screw up too. Makes me feel less inadequate about worrying all night about using my little tackle

Re: Dragging anchor

hm yep. Incidentally, i wd have though the area pretty sodding deep around there. There is an anchorage just near the entrance to St Jean Cap ferrat just to the north of one bit of the hammerhead of cap ferrat. Didn't think there was any other anchorage in that bay and er, obviously i may be correct.

Anyone got an chart/pic to whack up?

Re: tosspots

They only build hobbit versions in NZ so what is he on about? What they should have done is get one built in a size suitable to the boat....after all it's someones 'my precious'

Anyway, what's this about superstition?

Re: Dragging anchor

No, there are no other anchorages there apart from the one you have mentioned. Its all rock apart from that bay.
For the keen people, the anchorage is 43'41.344N 007'20.583E

Re: Dragging anchor

well, it certainly is poss to stay there all night, i was there last year. Tho with a danforth...

"Near the entrance to beaulieu" sounds as tho it was on the way in, but i wd have thought the marina far far too small. I think it let go in the anchorage. The winds are flukey behind that headland. And from ashore, you can't see the boats. Nonetheless, that's why you have crew innit. Tsk, i spose we stinkies will have to showem how to do it...

Re: Dragging anchor

There is only one charted rock behind the headland. It hit "rocks" which would tie up with it being just SW of Beaulieu in the "Baie des Forumis" cos' there are loads of rocks there. Pehaps I am reading too much into "rocks" cos' it could also have been just N of Beaulieu in the other bay but I think that is too shallow.

Re: Dragging anchor

if the pic is of the boat actually on the rocks right now, it is against the west/nwest side of the bay, between stjean and beaulieu. David Niven used to live in one of the villas v near or mebbe in the pic, and there is a walkway along the coast. It's all quite rocky, few if any beaches.

Re: Dragging anchor

Good website, why does it have crazy depths on there? The anchorage isn't 85ft deep let alone 85m!

Re: Dragging anchor

yeah, that sounds right, i stayed in 10-15 metres i think.

But the rocks are a good way from the anchorage. I mean, they must have all gone off and got sloshed in the marina at st jean and then come back and oops, bugger. It would take a boat quite while to drag anchor and end up over there, must be at least half a mile probly nearer a mile?

Re: Dragging anchor

Perhaps they anchored close in, let out all the chain and swung onto the rocks.

Re: Dragging anchor

Now that would have been a particularly stupid thing to do. I really can't believe a professional crew would have been so careless.

Re: Dragging anchor

there's no anchorage within a long way of those rocks. It dragged and dragged and dragged. It's about the same as anchoring in a bay oin whitesand bay i think - or is it cawsand (plymouth west side) and then dragging and landing on the other side. Massive.
