I've just come forward for a bit of peace and quiet, and sat down on a sail. The starboard berth does not come up to the Ritz standards. One of the green steel-capped wellies has be used as an ashtray, and the mattress has a large stain of human bodily fluids.
I was just thinking of how nicely you prepare the berths, when some crew, known or unknown, make it on board to go for a sail.
Talking about presenting new crew to their cabins, they've probly had a long trip and are a bit anxy.
'It's all essential gear, but your first job is to sort it out and put it in the right place on board.' would be a wrong approach, unless it was a bloody good berth (eg historic old sailing ship) then I would be, 'shout louder,'.
But on a tricky yacht or off-season, they need to know in advance they will sleep comfortably, and be well fed in jolly company. I definitely lay out clean warm bedding, and have a curry on, I would hope for that myself.
At this stage I'm finding the psychological / social aspects of skippering a yacht a bit more engaging than rigging or pilotage for example.
Banned subjects have been extended from the traditional Religion and Politics, to include B **t and...a new chart-topper*... 'The Environment'

If your forecabin is worse than this, bring it on.

As the boat is ashore and is in that transition from gentleman's yacht to shed under construction I'll take a few pictures when I finally get round to removing the lining of the forecabin, sorting out the insulation and getting it looking as nice as it once was. I am wondering if I put red strip LEDs visiting crew might get the wrong idea.

There was one small disaster with visit crew this summer! On the trip from Blyth to Scarborough my highly experienced crew member forgot to close the forehatch. Thankfully, all was not lost as Scarborough harbour has a laundrette.

At times Concerto can look like a tip. I should have photographed the interior when I was working on her in July and August - everywhere was covered with tools, tins, boxes and buckets and the floor was difficult walk on. These photos are from last summer just after I had renovated the sole boards. Notice the table has been removed off the boat. None of the main cabin woodwork had been stripped, that was done this year. Even the old cooker has been replaced now, it was in the big box.

This shows how the woodwork was revived with the starboard half of the main bulkhead refurbished.

To see how Concerto looks tidy and with almost all of the interior refurbished:

Milady won't allow such a state of affairs. so the mess array of essential equipment accumulates while the job's happening but, at the end of the day or the end of the job, everything has to go away. This is made easier because most of it lives in cockpit lockers, so it's either put it away or risk it getting wet overnight. Besides, Management [bully] won't serve my whisky until it's done [/bully]

What disgusting company I appear to be keeping.

A photo of my forecabin would be depressing beyond belief, since, for various reasons, it has been unoccupied during the season.
