Morning,

Im in the market for a new boat and looking at 1998 Merry Fisher 610.

She has a 50 Hp Yam 4 stroke and just unsure about being underpowered.

Any advice?

Thanks

I have a Merry fisher 645 with a 115 hp Suzuki on the back (maximum for the boat)
I can cruise at 18 kts and max out around 24 kts with a clean hull and not much loading. Can also happily cruise around at 6 kts nicely. End of season im down to 22 kts max.
Depending on what type of boating you want to do, i would say the powers on the low side and you may struggle to get on the plane with just a 50 on the back with the boat loaded up. If your only interested in slow speed cruising it will be fine.
Ive found that most of my boating (95%) is slow speed, but its handy to have the extra speed.
Merry fishers are nice boats and the yam is a fine engine :-)

I have sailed that exact model 610 many times and I can tell that 50 hp is grossly underpowered. Do not expect to come up on plane without a never ending struggle and expect your boat to mainly plough with the tip pointing to heaven.
You will need nothing less than 80 hp to enjoy that boat at full potential.

If I was considering that boat I would try and get a price for the 20 year old 50 hp Yamaha against a brand new outboard with more horsepower, certainly the hull would be good but I would not want to go to sea with a 20 year old outboard even if it was of a higher horsepower.

Is a 115hp 4stroke to big for a 610
