Mercury 9.9 idle issues

Hello,

My outboard usually starts first pull and runs maybe a little rough in idle but didn't stall. There have been two occasions where I would pull it too slowly and it would splutter and die (then it would take numerous pulls and waiting to get it going again).

The carb has been cleaned recently, new sparks and ht leads.

Yesterday I tried adjusting the screw near the red arrow in my picture, and it wouldnt stay in idle at all (kept stalling). I had also just added some two stroke oil into some fresh petrol and hadnt mixed it so well, could this have made it cut out in idle?

I really wanted to adjust the shaft throttle (blue arrow on my picture) but I was expecting a screw to adjust, does anyone know how to adjust this for idle.

Someone told me they adjust the enrichment to control idle speed, but this doesnt seem to affect anything (no noticeable increase in engine speed)

The only number I can see is 37-13020.

Thanks, Joe

Unfortunately you cant upload pics until you have a few posts under your belt. If you could share them from a hosting site (imgur etc) you can get round this and we may be able to help.

My guess is you have been told wrong. Playing with enrichment (pilot jet) is almost certainly the cause of your problems. Idle is controlled by a set screw on the throttle arm generally.

Hi, sorry about that.

This should be the link:

Im not sure if the screw near the red arrow did anything maybe it was just a coincidence.

create an account. Loads of resources that can assist - Brunswick Marine in EMEA Download Center - Download Center

look for 10142050.pdf it has basic throttle adjustments starting pg 75

2. Engines not equipped with an adjustable speed screw: a. The carburetor has been calibrated for engine to run at the recommended idle speed. The engine idle speed is not adjustable.

That is on pg 76 of the one you mentioned,( Brunswick Marine in EMEA Download Center - Download Center )

This sounds like mine as I dont have the adjustable screw, one thing that is concerning me is that the idle control (tortoise hair symbol on the front) doesnt change the idle speed. I can see it moving but its not engaging the idle control (the blue arrow thing).

Thanks for the manual, that will be very useful :)
