There are loads of these in the Balearics (there's a surprise!) but I can't really understand why people buy them. I disagree with your blog in that the prices I've seen have not been all that competitive. Then, basically, the design is a fake; they've made it look like a traditional Menorquin fishing boat but there's a bloody great hull extension at the stern to provide the necessary lift for SD speed and that hull extension looks ridiculous IMHO. Then the interior, especially the saloon is very poky for the size of boat and, when they fit a flybridge, that is tiny too. And 15kts is not much to boast about and the ones I've seen at sea throw an awful lot of spray about. Overall, you have to make a lot of compromises to have a boat that looks traditional. Not for me
hi Mike
agree about the aft part of the hull, small upper saloon, flybridge quite small and its true they are quite wet...
but still at 550.000 EU for a 16 metre its quite cheap
a new Ferretti costs 1150k and the Apreamare is 1 mill plus
that is nearly the double
then its also worth noting that a GB costs double the price altough more spacious
IMO they are very competitive but then I am speaking about new boat prices

[/ QUOTE ]Spot on.
Though there are many boaters out there willing to spend their money for boats that "look like..." something.
Which applies to a number of boats, btw, not only Menorquin (Apreamare, Mochi, ...).
Each to their own, of course, but personally, when I want to live the SEA, there's nothing like a wooden trawler (or a steel one, if and when I could consider really long range cruises).
But when I want to have fun with the BOAT, what else can beat a small 80+ kts lake boat?
A bit extreme maybe, but anything else in between is a compromise one way or another, imho.
the Menorquin pays a price for a hull which has more forward weight then its original format
on the other hand some compromises are pretty good like the Apreamare and Mochi
I think the Apreamare has quite a hull of its own now being copied a lot in Italy
the Menorquin tryed to offer the same concept but kept the format or the idea of the hull or the same, you can like the idea but you can also hate it
I personally like and if you can stand with things Deleted User noted you can live quite well with it...
then it you like its presence something which is quite unique you can go on for this its choice, if you dont you can look at other things....

I'm all for unique boats. But I think that approach is happiest for a casual boat. The greater the time spent on the boat, the harder it is to stay satisfied just on the basis of uniqueness. Of course many of us end up not having nearly so much time for boats as we hoped.

[/ QUOTE ]Oh, yes, absolutely.
I was just arguing about the "appearance over substance" trend which seems to affect the boats demand.
Just as an example, I've been told that Mochi gives a Borsalino hat as a gift to their customers.
What do you think they're pretending to sell, a boat or a lifestyle?
But as I already said, each to their own.
After all, such trend is not just related to boats, these days...
I think the Menorquin more to the competition sells more to people who want to reduce there boating costs same as the Estensi Maine
fuel and servicing main concerns that it the feedback I got from the owners this Summer
on the other hand Mochi or Aprea has much to do with style as much as a Riva IMO
but I also think that boating is a bit of a different lifestyle on its own and with this new trend of Gozzo, Lobster boats and Trawler in a Med Marina you feel like the one who is not following the trend
but the lifestyle of the product is something very important for any serious builder, then why do we end up at the shows with 100 kg each brochure for builder X and Y...
the substance what is, is for you to find out....
for e.g. I think Aprea has much of it, if not more then the original concept, same goes with Mochi but they are not on there own
Are you sure about that price, poweryacht? €550k for the MY160 sounds very cheap. I stand to be corrected but the last time I looked at Menorquin prices, I don't remember them being all that cheap
In any case, it may be 16m long but a lot of that 16m is unusable
the space is not so bad IMO tough much could be made to better use especially the forward deck, compare to an open boat more then a flybridge, as IMO that is an ugly optional
they might improve also as now they are using Italian Designer Spadolini (Elegance, Akhir etc) used for the new MY 145
