Menai Strait - Local advice needed

I am departing Glasson (Lancaster) on Saturday 1st June (03:00) to arrive Bangor approx 15:30. I intend traversing the strait as soon as possible but am finding the pilot book and Reeds advice somewhat vague. Having come through there the opposite direction 2 months ago and had glorious weather and no water running I fear that this time my luck will not be so good. If anyone with local knowledge could let me have some clear advice on departure times so that (If possible) I can cross the Bar sensibly (preferably on that tide) I would be very grateful My boat is a sailing boat with 3 foot draft (5 knots through water).

Don't know which pilot you are using but the Anglesey and North Wales by Phil Morris (pub by NW Venturers) is the one to have.

Swellies - slack water 2 hrs before Liverpool HW.

Carnafon Bar - In on Dover HW -5 to -3 out on -2 to HW, - this -+3 hrs local HW - use Llandwyn Island (Pilots cove) secondary Note in both cases better if you stick to the start of these to get the favourable tides....

Hope this helps

If you are coming into Menai from Glasson then I would have thought you would come into the strait past Puffin Island, and then on to Bangor

All fairly easy - access past Puffin at any state of tide and hence on to Bangor. No messing with Swellies or anything nasty.

Arrive Bangor around high water or a little before

Hope the weather improves enjoy the trip.

Slack water in the Swellies is around 2 hours before high water Liverpool. You can pick up a swinging mooring opposite Dickies boat yard (just before Bangor Pier) at Bangor to wait for the tide, set off 2.5 hours before HW Liverpool to catch the Swellies off guard.

Can't help you with the Bar though, my pilot book is 200 miles away on the boat. I can give you the e-mail address of someone who will know though if you want.

Best of luck for the trip. I'd come and see you off as I live in Lancaster but 03:00..............??

Peter
