Hi it's time to renew the aft cabin mattresses as the foam is losing its "spring". Propose to replace with memory foam . Now having little knowledge of this foam how is it used ? I Propose to DIY with 4" foam so is it used "naked "(the foam not me) ie no cover but covered with a bedsheet or is it covered as a normal berth ?

It doesn't take kindly to being washed, so I would recommend a matress protector unless the cabin is only occasionally used.

I have had best results with 4"-5" of foam with a 1-1/2" memory foam topper. the memory foam is heavy and can be hot in warmer climates so using a topper helps with both of those and gives a good feel. Of course it boils down to personal taste. Latex foam is making a comeback of sorts as it does not mildew and has a good lifespan. I would suggest a cloth cover for the whole thing as foam is easily damaged and the cover will help protect it, also keeps it cleaner.

We have a full depth, memory foam mattress at home. It is supposed to be of the 'vented' type and is very comfortable at first but after about half an hour it gets very warm and uncomfortable. Unfortunately the wife loves it!

I never had an issue with my memory foam mattress at home being too hot. I've now peeled off the memory foam layer from the 4" normal foam underneath and chucked it on top of my 4" foam fee berth cushions. Perfect

Memory Foam is like Mateus Rosé - a triumph of marketing over mediocrity.

That's unfair - good memory foam is fatastic - we have a genuine Tempur bed and it is orders of magnitude more comfortable than anything else we've ever slept on. Thin memory foam toppers are a different matter.
