memory foam mattress

It's time to change the mattress in our front cabin as it's getting a bit lumpy, so the question is.... Rather than pay the expense of getting one made to measure can I just buy a memory foam mattress and cut it myself?

Memory foam is great but just be aware that it absorbs moisture and it can feel a bit damp when used on a boat. I explored it for our last boat and the suppliers (a well known marine upholstery company) didn't recommend it for that reason.

I know plenty of people who have them and say there isn't a problem but I would beg to differ having tried one. Maybe people just get used to it or don't notice but I did:)

What did they suggest instead?
 
We have memory foam & we get condensation under ours but we have had condensation under every boat mattress we have had you just have to air them
Don't think the memory foam is any better or worse than others
We do have memory foam on our bed at home and it does have a kind of cold (possibly dampish) feel when you initially get in but after a few mins it's gone
I didn't like ours at home initial but soon got used to it
 
Many thanks all. Our current mattress gets damp underneath even with the spongy mesh stuff under it. Next thing is to drill holes in the base of the bed for better airflow. Currently when we leave the boat we jack the mattress up so it dries out.

Will order a memory foam today and give it a go.

We have memory foam on our beds in the boat and have had for several years now. As previously said we do get some condensation but we also had this with the normal mattresses. We haven’t had any additional problems when using the memory foam.
We also cut ours to size with a good kitchen knife and got a good finish to the cut edge.
The memory foam is well worth doing IMHO.
 
We love our Benny 34 Trawler Yacht in every way except the Mattress in the forward cabin. Tried memory foam which is a little better but as Greg points out is prone to condensation.

So this weekend I am fitting one of these to see if this improves things.

 
Yes you can cut it. It will be fine. Can be hard work though.

I've done it myself. I cut a super king size down to king size with a very sharp bread knife. A hot wire machine would be better though.

We love mem foam we just have dehumidifier on timer and lift mattress and put something under it when away from boat
 
Likewise - we use mem foam toppers on an extra layer anti-damp stuff. No real issues with damp. We, like others, just leave lift them up when we leave the boat.
 
Tried a memory foam topper in the rear cabin double. Found it to be very warm, which I hate, and they don't breath (synthetic product). Also, when you turn over, I found that the indentation you make (hence the name) does not quickly go away so you end up slipping into the hole you have left. I would not have another. Better to get a shaped sprung mattress. Not cheap, but well worth it.
 
We had a memory foam mattress made for a previous boat and we chucked it out after a few weeks. It was hot and sweaty and felt damp after a while as others have said. Also personally I found it uncomfortable. IMHO, there's no substitute for a custom made pocket sprung mattress on top of a sprung wooden frame to create an air gap under it. Costs a few bob but what price a good nights sleep
 
As previously mentioned we leave the de humidifier on a timer in the master cabin when we leave the boat, this combined with mesh under the base mattress has meant a very dry bed.

Does take a bit of getting used to but a £20 Asda mattress cut to size has made the bed more comfortable.

Agree a good quality pocket sprung mattress is the way to go if you can afford it

I have been using these under the mattress for about six years. No visible condensation whatsoever :) -and it improved mattress comfort!
