There are a few older threads about using memory foam for berths but not much information on cost. I have a seriously bad back and I definitely need to sort something on my recent acquisition before we undertake the long trip home from Preveza to Kusadasi. Sailaboutvic kindly mentioned on another thread that there's a place in Lefkas that does memory foam and i'm going to check that out when I visit in a few weeks. Truth is, however, I haven't the foggiest idea how much I should be paying for memory foam. I don't know the exact size of the berth until I get there and measure it but I imagine it's probably around 1.4 M x 1.9M and I'm thinking the mattress would need to be around 15Cm. I don't mind paying but I hate going into a place and not having an idea whether they are ripping me a new one or giving me a bargain. So can anyone help and while we're at it does anyone know how the hell I can tell good quality memory foam from rubbish without having an opportunity to bring it home and sleep on it for a month.

You can get very hot on memory foam. I'm not sure that I would want it in the Med, even though I have it at home. My bunks have a thin layer of soft foam over a firmer base and this suits my dodgy back well enough.

Bought one for the forward cabin of my yacht - 2M tapered down to 1.4M and 4 CM thick prior to a three month sail around France last summer, we slept on it in great comfort through different temperatures without problems. Came from < the foamshop.co.uk > and as I recall was less than £200

At 4CM are you using it on top of your original mattress? I'm not worried about the temperature aspect. We have a memory foam on the bed at home for around 5 years and no problems.

I'm not a fan of memory foam. The memory bit seems to admit that it doesn't spring back but leaves you in a hole.
More than one set of friends have the expensive memory foam mattress in pride of place.. on their guest bed-
