out of interest - what do people do when staying onboard over winter - most people look as tho they hole up for 3-4 months - i can see it getting expensive spending all that time in the pub

For those of us suffering economic hardships, who are forced out of the med in summer missing the wonderful crowds jet skis and sunbathing in 43 degrees we retern in late september start cleaning the boat fixing & changing fitting the heater

If back from the Baltic look for a new boat and hope the folkboat sells or can be exchanged for an old car

Untill christmas get together with others to hear about their summer look at new equipment visit ashore enjoy the med as it cools and winter sets in,in the new year when its finaly low season enjoy new cafes visit the Islands choosing good weather to go and the same to retern

Visit places such as Nice Cannes Antebies corsica Elba port cross

Look for a new laptop this one im borrowing almost dosent work its got a "à second delay type a word and wait!

OK its a firefox problemwith pactor if its not then ill use offbyone anyway its faster.

What i wanted to say (this is much better) is in winter you can explore some ports have places you can anchor without the jet skis perhaps youll get a visit from the Italian police to ask who you are how many on board quick and polite then calm (weather permitting) winter was once for staying in one port for working on the boat now its for doing everything you would have done in summer without the crowdes heat and prices

If i dident have to go back to the cursed baltic in a week (or so) id be off to Sardinia equiped with new info and a couple of posts below a detailed guide kindly put together by a kind forumite during winter az im useing a new browser i cant look at the name

so theres lots to do even walking through town at 2am the street lights showing the way through old towns and villages sleeping test testtest

If you need to be entertained, it may not be the life for you.......

There are many types of liveaboard cruisers..
but mainly two types.... those who think it is, or want a permanent holiday.. often misguided..
Those who do it as a WAY of life..

Our last winter saw the boat in Kemer Marina.
The expat livaboard community there have a nice club house type set up as part of the Navigor Bar / Restaurant and seem to fill their lives with tennis and keep fit lessons, opera / theatre / bus trips, walking and hill climbing, snow skiing, language and cookery classes, TV and film evenings - as well as the more traditional old fashioned social activities over a bottle on each others yachts.

I understand those at Marmaris share the same range of pleasures.

Cheers
JOHN

Well we do what everyone else does over the winter:

Clean and polish the hull
Service the engine
Service the sails and rigging as needed
Do all the other jobs I promissed SWMBO I'd do over the summer and never got around to as, it interupted with sailing and enjoying myself.

Loads of things to do, work on a boat never stops. Social life...can be as hectic or quiet as you want it.

Live aboard life = doing maintenance in warm and exotic locations!

Where are you planning on staying for the winter? a lot of seriously bored people seem to spend a serious amount of time boring each other on here!
Personally, I try to find something constructive to do.
At the mo, I am refurbishing a boat for a chap.
I nthe last few years, I have bought a Portugese ruin and spent 3 winters doing that up, (I AM NOT A MILLIONAIRE, total wealth, inc boat, probably 50k, stlg).
Skippering charter boats in the Caribb and Ireland.
Delivering boats back to the UK.
In 14 yrs I have rarely had an idle winter.

HOW SOME! of these peeps on here, can sit around for the winter, in the marina, is beyond me, I would be bored "WITLESS".
There is a lot of satisfying winter therapy about, other than the PUB.
P.M., me if you are seriously interested.
Bill.

I think men enjoy the three months of winter in the marina much more than women or am I wrong.

Most people spend a lot more than 3 months wintering I think, me included.
I have always found, wintering in a place abroad with the minimum of Brits there is the best option, no ghetto, the max opportunities to meet local people, experience the culture, get some of the language.
For an outgoing lady in these circumstances, winter can be as rewarding as it can be for the guys.

Well, if the boat is your home - as ours is - you do all the things you'd expect to do 'at home'. The benefit is that your home can be wherever you like (on the water!). No lawn to mow, no large heating bills, no council tax,...

As for where you decide to stay for the winter, it's down to personal taste. Not everyone has the same tastes but you can go for anything from a marina with dozens of liveaboards and a busy social scene to anchoring by yourself in a quiet spot. Or move about a bit, some do.

We bought a laptop which apart from Internet access allowed us to rent DVD's and listen to all the English Radio Stations. Then there were the usual jobs that always need doing on a boat plus shopping, reading, people watching, cooking, chatting and so on.

In UK we would both work all day every day to feed us and the system, now away in the boat we can do what we want, when we want. We still have to do the washing and clean the boat, get the shopping and do the maintainance but with no deadlines except darkness and the following summer, there is time for the occassional drink each day, a few parties each week and loads of passionate lovemaking!!!! The choice is ours and we think we can handle it, just /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hear hear to everyone so far and I would add - buy a boat that requires work rather than pennies, that way you will always have something to do and have the time to do it (rather than being a wage slave). I would also suggest wintering in a country where you have to learn the language - Serbo-Croat lessons make those winter nights fly by! And if you're still struggling to entertain yourself, get a dog. Woof.
